VW parts?
« on: March 10, 2012, 10:22:04 am »
are they better made than OE parts? I don't quite understand the difference? most people say its the same thing but in a VW box?
the thing is i've ordered a LUK clutch kit /DMF from europarts small company for £371 all in delivered with 2 year warranty
I just got quoted from a skoda dealer with discounted prices compared to the dealers outside £740.25 for the same stuff.. is it the same things but just the price is bumped up?

LUK and SACHS make most of the clutches and flywheels on MK5 so it will be the same stuff,Volkswagen are always miles out on flywheels for some reason.

The best thing about genuine parts is that you get two years parts and labour warranty meaning if it goes faulty the dealer will fit the replacement  part wheras you will probably just get a replacment part if buying from ECP or the like.  For this reason if the price was closeish i would always go genuine but on this occasion you are better off doing what you have done i think.

heres the exact prices from the dealer

Flywheel Bolts £9.56 (all 6)
Dual Mass £539.99---why so much!??!
Clutch Kit £177.99 (This item is exchange so £36.00 will be refunded when the old clutch is returned making it £141.99)
Clutch Bolts £1.72 (all 6)
Clutch Slave Cylinder / Release bearing £46.99

I know you say if anything happened VW would supply another one and fit it.. but you know what they are like.. they're most likely to just say it wasn't fitted properly by the garage and get out of it? am I correct?

Not really if its genuinly faulty then they get paid by Volkswagen to fix it,why would they turn the work away?  on the flip side if it genuinly was caused by bad fitment then you would be thinking they are just trying to get out of it,they can't win can they.

I would say realisticly theres probably a 10% chance on a good day to claim the item is faulty if VW didn't fit it themselfs all depends I guess like some people get their rusty wings sorted some don't

Had my the DMF/Clutch replaced on my brothers A4 recently.... was quoted north of £900 for the parts alone from Audi....
ended up getting the parts around £350 including all the bolts etc (this was for an LUK kit)

when we looked at the old ones they were in fact stamped LUK! yeah they had the requisite audi logo/part numbers stamped but importantly they had been manufactured by LUK...

the parts themselves would be 100% identical... if you've got a reputable garage fitting it, go with the ECP parts and enjoy the extra cash!

if it turns out the ECP kit was a dud then thats just a tough draw, the one that you would have got from the VAG dealer could just have easily been a faulty one too! all down to the knowledge/experience of the mechanic mostly and 'luck' as to whether or not the part was faulty in the first place

(i also had an LUK kit fitted to my Mk5 2,500 miles ago - not a problem since!)

One thing to remember is if you fit a genuine clutch and it fails within the 2 yrs the dealer WILL claim its the way you have driven and at best you may get a discount on labour or parts but not both, many yrs ago at work we had a cambelt fail early (18 months iirc and 14k) anyway we filled in the report to claim parts and labour, a tech was sent out and guess what, they said it had been over tightened, (spring tensioner, you cant over tighten it  :stupid:) they gave a 20% discount on the belt kit and nothing on labour

So in answer to the question a dealer part doesnt mean full cover on costs if it fails
