Oil consumption - TDI
« on: March 08, 2012, 09:52:13 pm »
Hiya Guys

I know this is a GTI forum, but there are a few of us "Soot Chuckers" on here.

I was wondering what kind of oil consumption you guys get.

I've had my 2004 GT TDI 140 since November and have covered just over 7000 miles in it. It had a service and new Turbo fitted when i bought it. For the first few months i checked the oil regularly and it was always on max.

I checked it today and its now half way between max and min. There is no smoke as such and looking underneath the car no wet spots...However looking at the front of the engine underneath the plastic cover i can see a build up of oil?!

Looking at the service history it was run on longlife service oil for 5 services. When it was serviced the last time it says in the book that longlife oil was not used, if that has anything to do with it?

Holding down the clock re-set button it say i have 2000 miles before the next service.

Any comments on this guys? Really want to look after this car and its great and am really enjoying it. I had a similar issue with my Vauxhall Astra and dont really want a repeat of this!!

Thanks

I posted a similar thread not long ago, I drive a MK5 GTI so different to yours, my car goes through a lot of engine oil with no sign of leak. I was advised the amount I was going through, about 4-6 litres in a year was normal. I had mine checked by VW as well who said all was ok.

You however have a different car and are seeing a build up of oil so I would imagine that there may be more of an issue here. I would get it checked out to be honest mate for peace of mind. Find out what decent garages are near you and have them look at it.

I've had a chance to take the cover off today and get some pictures

This is from looking at the engine from the front

This one is at the front again but looking from the side

Looking at the dipstick its now about halfway. So 7000 miles and using that isn't that bad. Its just seeing the oil patch is making me think it might be leaking abit too?!

Took it to a garage for a quick look and he said its not using too much and not to worry too much.
