Ed 30 remapped..
« on: March 12, 2012, 02:28:17 pm »
Hi guys,
Been using the forum for a while now but only recently joined up, Got some great info from here so  :happy2:

Ok so the story so far.. Got the car mapped at R tech about six months ago and was pleased with the outcome (rr was out of action so didnt get any data on gains)
Anyway last week managed to get it on locally and was somewhat disappointed when it only made 230! Thing is there was a definite improvement after the map so I was a little confused! Anyway rather that calling the guys at R tech (great bunch just 350 miles away) I decided to chuck on another map, this time from celtic tuning.

So an hour later it was THAT moment...

231 bhp 240 tq

£350 down but not defeated yet!

The tuner did say the dv was known for causing issues so when I got home did a search on here found the thread on checking it (thank you) It was well and truly screwed, half of the orange flange ripped so I got another one ordered and fitted it.

OMFG

I knew these motors were pokey but I was pretty much blown away, night and day is an understatement! I got it back down to the rolling road and the outcome was..

274 bhp 319 tq

So next I decided to get some new rubber on as it was really struggling to put the power down, has made a big improvement however now i'm getting the dreaded clutch slip at around 3800rpm its only in 4/5/6 and with care I can keep it under control but then what's the point of having the power and not being able to use it?

I would post the results but dot have access to a scanner, i'm really happy with the map but looking at others cant help thinking 319 tq is quite alot compared to the 274 bhp? Sorry i'm not very technically minded and only going of bits ive read on here.

Do those figures seem ok for stage 1 with no other mods and more importantly any recommendations for a clutch!

Thanks for any help

Dave

Hi Dave.

What your saying about the clutch slipping in high gears @ low revs is pretty much standard after you've added all the extra power.

You've just missed a 'group buy' on here for the upgraded Sachs clutch & cover, try Ed @ APS using the details below as he may still be able to help you out  :happy2:

01280 840 491 or ed@autops.co.uk

Let him know your on here and good luck!

Andy.

I would have though that Celtic Tuning would have done a pre check before mapping your car and the fault of the Dv would have been highlighted saving you £350.

It's a Celtic map but the place that put it on were not aware of the dv fault until they called Celtic up after the result,. tbh I should have done my homework first, lesson learnt!!

If I had the time and R tech were closer I would have gone back to them (should have called them and told them the symptoms but I'm not known for my patience and wanted the power back!!)

Hi,

You wouldnt have needed to drive 350miles, a 2 min phone call would have shed some light on the issues.   Just a shame companies jump the gun and go for the map sale not the spending 20mins logging to help and advise..   If you ever have issuse again you can call us anytime and if your tuner is kind and puts the car back to stock and refunds you as a good will gesture, then your more than welcom to have your rtech map reloaded and go on the rr.

Nick,
I now know I should have called you guys, I was just caught up in the moment of wanting it sorted. The tuner in question had never done a ed 30 before so whilst I see your point this really was my own fault for be impatient!

I cant believe you spent £350 on a new remap when £50 on a DV would have solved everything.

I agree with Nck.  Celtic tuning are a bit out of order for doing that IMO, i bet they new full well what the issue was :fighting:

It wasn't celtic themselves but a tuner in Plymouth using there map. It was only after the map that the guy suggested the DV could be at fault and then after some searching on here it all made sense!
In fairness to the company this was the first ed 30 they had mapped and looking back I should have held on and gone back to r-tech or given them a call.

Still, they knew that you had already tuned and those results, yes? If they were half knowledgeable they should've known your results after the 1st remap showed something was not right. And, they should've recommended looking elsewhere for the issue, not had you pay 350 more before suggesting the DV.

So you have ended up with a generic map from a slave tuner that has zero experience with your car, Hmmm..... Did they not think about datalogging the car to diagnose the fault before asking if you wanted the map changing? did they carry out any datalogging at all before, during or after the mapping?

I am well aware that i should have gone to someone who is familiar with the car however I work 6 sometimes 7 days a week and just wanted the car sorted. R tech did  data log before the original map and it got the all clear, obviously if the rr had been operational it would have shown up but due to work etc I got it done knowing I wouldn't get a rr print out.
As for the latest map i'm not sure re data logging, looking back I presume not!

So you don't really know if the ignition timing values are safe, AFR is safe, not overboosting etc....

Theres plenty of people on here that have Vagcom that can log your car for you, worth it just for the piece of mind.  or go back to the tuner and ask for datalogging.

I always try and show customers the results of datalogging after the tuning has been carried out, most stare at me as if I am daft as they don't have any interest or understanding of what I am showing them, but with some basic explanations they leave understanding boost, AFR's, EGT's, how ignition advance works etc....
