Upgrading Bushes.....
« on: March 13, 2012, 04:00:55 pm »
Hi...

I'm looking to change some of the bushes on my Mk5 namely the Front and rear anti roll bar bushes to start with and I was wondering if this was something that could easily be done at home on the driveway? and better still if anyone had any links to any good DIY's?

I was thinking of putting powerflex  ARB bushes in (the current ones are still the original ones fitted 154,800 miles ago!)

thanks

.
A very stable jack? Take the wheels off and disassemble the suspension. Plus lots of strong elbow grease.

As far as I know for a full set of bushes throughout the Mk5 it's quite a labour intensive job, takes time, and is best done in a workshop with either a pit or a lift thingy.

Rear ones would be easy in the ARB and you could do it at home.

The front involves removing the whole subframe, removing the ARB, cutting the bushing mount, taking the old mount out, putting new one in and then welding it back together and reassembly. You would struggle to do this on the drive unless you had some very tall Axle Stands. Which i think would be dangerous.

I'm not aware (but i haven't looked) of anyone just selling the bracket for the bushing on it's own.

Hi guys, just got off the phone to VW...

the Rear ARB clamps - 5.99 incl vat, rear bolts 70p incl vat

front ARB - they dont sell the clamps seperate, comes as a complete 'kit'... same story on etka, only listed as a complete 'kit'

so say i would be able to get it into a pit, i'm assuming i'd have to cut out the old bushes and not the clamps as i cant replace those? then the new bush goes in, clamp over the top and bolt in?

no way am i gna replace the entire ARB!
