test engine oil?
« on: March 13, 2012, 03:29:24 pm »
is there a company that will test your oil for you? or send out a test kit etc?

I think my engine oil has a strong smell of petrol, so just want to make sure before replacing the HPFP

hot oil would have slight petrol note... I fitted HPFP at the weekend and was shocked when sensed petrol like smell in oil, but checked my missus car and it's exactly the same, best to check oil level...

the only thing im paranoid about is when VW recommended me to change the HPFP O ring when changing the cam follower, I changed it and it was way smaller than the orginal what was already on -.- so now I keep thinking fuel may be leaking between the 0 ring

thats why i just took the link down, no point sending something like that to america.

just been reading more and more into it - apparently its quite a common thing on our cars, especially if your running a map or short trips. something to do with "blow by"

There is no need to worry about the o ring, that's nothing to do with the workings of the pump it's just to stop oil leaking down the outside of your engine.
If you really want to know how good your oil is there are a few companies you can find through google. Ring them to see if they can test for fuel in oil and post up the results here please :)

There are several companies that do it on a one off basis - Google will be your friend.

I'm not sure what prices will be like, my company charges $60 USD per analysis but that's on a bulk scale.

Identifying Fuel Dilution could be costly if it's not significant.  It's referred to as a Flash Point Test, normally using the Pensky-Martens Closed Cup which is a bit more of an analogue result (either it is or it isn't at a specific value).

If you wanted to get an idea of the volume or percentage of fuel in the oil you need to either do several tests with the Pensky-Martens at varying temperatures until you find the level or use a much more expensive method such as Gas Chromatography.

Viscosity will also give an indication of fuel dilution in engine oil.
