Replaced the fuel filter today - what a difference
« on: March 14, 2012, 09:36:02 pm »
This afternoon i finally got round to replacing the fuel filter in the Jetta and man what a difference. After checking the service history it would seem the filter was last changed at 40k miles which was 80k miles/3 years ago. I had to drain the contents of the filter housing. It was not a pretty sight!

Since replacing the filter the idle has been significantly more stable and the car seems much more responsive and dare i say a tad faster.

I noticed this when I had it done at my 4th year service. The car felt much, much faster.

The GTI isn't just a machine. It's very much a living, breathing thing.

The difference is ridiculous to the point where i actually enjoyed driving it earlier.

In the last 10 days the car has had
- New front discs (Pagid)
- Brake fluid change (Peter Cooper Southampton)
- Aircon regas (Peter Cooper Southampton)
- full service

And Friday it is going in for a new DMF and clutch.

Damn thing is more expensive than my camera addiction!

Peter Cooper VW have a package deal at the moment of £110 for a brake fluid change and zircon regas which i thought was a pretty good deal, ok i could have found it cheaper elsewhere but the last time i had my brake fluid changed by an indie they fooked the slave cylinder!

Changed my fuel filter this evening, with a oem Bosch one.  took about 15 minutes all up, most of the time was jacking the car up and making sure it was safe.

Car is running so much smoother, engine note is distinctly different from both inside and outside, idle feels smoother overall. Did a short drive, all felt very good overall.  :happy2:  Got one of my weekly trips to our bristol office later in the week so will check to see if there is any improvement in mpg etc as well.

My ED30 is in VW for service tomorrow, Cambelt/Waterpump, Aircon re-gas and brake fluid change, all in for £500 (after a little negotiating)  :happy2:

Thanks for starting this thread! I completely forgot about my fuel filter, I was going to replace a while ago but then git a new engine and didn't think to check. No record of a change in 3 years/60000 miles so probably due a new one!

Are euro car parts ok for this sort if thing or should I go to vw?

My GTI is in for major service tomorrow,
How much would vw add to the cost if i asked them to do the fuel filter at the same time?
