Just dropped my car off at vw for tomorrows service,
I asked about the fuel filter replacement and the bloke said we don't bother asking the customer about this and no one has ever asked him about it before,
He said he'll talk to a techie about it and get back to me.

....Yet again this illustrates the very differing standards which VW dealers operate to. When I arrive at my VW dealer's they make sure someone who knows his stuff is on hand and will bring out the head techie if they can't answer the question with certainty. Perhaps this is because once upon a time I really verbally let go at a salesman who blatently lied to me and I was very loud and very public!

Forum member Shabba168 (who originally PDI's my car in 2005) used to be a techie and was later moved to their front service desk - A very good idea. But I don't think he enjoyed wearing a shirt and tie and now is with vanworx.

Fuel filters filter dirt etc and as such, they should be changed! - You don't have to be a brain surgeon to realise that!

Well, whatever VW officially say, it can only be a good idea to change the fuel filter at some stage as mileage increases. The reality is that they filter dirt out and any filter needs cleaning or replacing. They're not expensive.

Dont understand why anyone would argue NOT to do it at 10k or major intervals for the sake of a tenner.

Might get Jabbasport to do it at same time as everything else they are going to be doing in 2 weeks)

Quite right.
Whatever the vw techie says to me tomorrow, I'll insist on a replacement filter.

How much dirt is in fuel?

....Depends which supermarket pump you fill up from. 'Dirt' is a generic term in this context, meaning anything which shouldn't be there.

I exclusively use V-Power too. I'm no expert on this and I don't know the science of what substances might get picked up from petrol storage tanks etc, but I reckon that a filter has been included by car manufacturers to filter any 'dirt' (foreign bodies etc etc) and so a certain amount of 'dirt' is expected.
