Quick question for Redrobin
« on: May 06, 2009, 10:50:12 pm »
Robin, been admiring your GTI for some time now. I really like the look of the LED rear lights. Just wanted to ask a couple of questions if I may ?

Firstly, are these the so called "genuine" VW ones and if so, were they available in RHD, as every pair I have been looking at are only in LHD ?

Do they need anything special to be fitted (like resistors) to stop the bulb warning light coming on ?

Any idea where I could pick some up from and approx how much ?

Cheers,
Andrew

This thread may help in sourcing the lights. http://www.tyresmoke.net/forum/vw-golf-gti-forum/117333-rear-leds.html

All are LHD so you have to switch the reverse and rear fogs lights to make it UK legal.
Without traction power is nothing!

....

Hi Andrew,

Yes, they are genuine VW parts and you only need to swop the inner red (fog) and white (reversing) lenses over.

I got them from VWSpeed but I don't think he's importing them at the moment due to foreign exchange rate I heard.

They display signals far better than the stock tail lights. cmdrfire has some on his GTI too.

Me too.

I think VWSpeed may be starting to drag stuff in again from Europe, certainly worth a phone call - he's also been relocating to Manchester, so he's just been ticking over whilst getting sorted.

Ooh... Manchester, that's just 30 minutes away from me. Cheers Tony. P.S. the lights look really bright in that shot.

Just for information, the reason I am looking to change, is partly cosmetic (i.e. they look better) but as Robin said, also partly safety. I had a very near miss the other night. I was braking to turn right (and indicating at the same time), and just as I was about to turn, some d*ck in an Astra tried to overtake me. Needless to say he slammed on and so did I.

A quiet word was had with the lad () and he apologised and said that he didn't see my indicator and tried to tell me it was my fault for not signalling. Needless to say, he thought better of that statement after a quiet word by my mate (passenger) and me.  :happy2:

....That's exactly the same reason which justified my liking their appearance enough to change to them. In my case it was a lorry!

It's a bad design fault in all the Mk5 tails. Brake light masks the indicator and it's especially likely to happen with DSG cars because your foot will be on the brake.

Same here, the OEM lights are shockingly dangerous - the LEDs are far, far superior.

See this.

Really think it's a must have now  :signLOL:

Saw Robins thread over at Tyresmoke, and think I will try and go down the route of installing the outers only (even though you still need to buy the inners), and using the ED30/R32 darkened inners.

This would mean not having to mess around with removing reflectors etc. AFAIK, (and please correct me if I am wrong), although the inners look like LEDS's there are none ? It's only a reverse and fog standard bulb with a dummy LED outer - right ?

Just need to find some LEDS at a decent price now !

Swapping the inners is an absolute doddle, don't be put off.

German ebay is 1 source...

Or, I've just spoken to Mike at VWSpeed (as he's a mate of mine) and he'll do a special order for some when we get back from the 'Ring on the 20th of May, if a few people want them. He doesn't carry them in stock at the moment.

The exchange rate is still shocking, so it'd be a case of whatever it is on the day of ordering you pay, although he'll try and sort something in the way of a deal, obviously. I'll get some "rough" costs and see if anyone's interested.
Sideways yo!

....Correct

The dummy LED inners is my only criticism.

I think I might rewrite that Tyresmoke thread as a Review over here.

Thanks for confirming Robin. I think a review thread here would be a good thing.

Tony, thanks for speaking to Mike. Would be interested to see what he can do when he gets back.

Appreciate all the feedback guys.  :happy2:

You know, I was just sat here thinking guys.

When I purchased the Golf, I said to the wife, I want a top spec one, with all the toys, on the promise that if I managed to find a car fully loaded, then I wouldn't need to spend anymore money....how wrong was I ?

I spent the last 3 years constantly adding bits here and there. Not huge amounts of money at a time (certainly not like some of the guys on here), but constant. Started with Sat Nav, then the Alloy pedals, the exterior styling, new badges, GTI Steering Wheel (adding the MFSW) etc etc....

What is it with Dubs, that you just can't stop modding ?

The naughty internet fairy whispers into your ear...

No worries on asking Mike, but don't expect them to be as cheap as the good old days - the Euro really is crap!
