Speaker upgrade

My OEM stereo seems far too powerful for the speakers. It sounds pretty good at about a third volume, but go above this and the speakers start to struggle.

Is there an easy upgrade with OEM or other manufacturer speakers that can cope and fit in the existing, hidden locations?

But in all honesty, it's not because your radio is too powerful. It's because it has no where near enough power to do anything decent.

Upgrading to the likes of an RCD310/510 is already a massive improvement.

Even simply upgrading to an aftermarket radio like pioneer,sony or Alpine. etc will already a HUGE improvement.

Decide what you want to do. as the factory speakers in this instance is the least of your problem.

But why is it that I can't get it above 35% Volume before the speakers start to distort? I'm no expert, but it seems to have far too much power, at least for these factory speakers?

Do you know the wattage of the factory speakers? I just want new ones to cope with the volume higher. I'm not interested in changing the head unit. It's powerful enough for me.

They are no more than 20 watts rms value with an upgraded headunit
Standard headunit around 10 watts but I'm not 100% sure if these are correct I read about it on another forum along time ago

often when speakers distort, it is a sign of the amplifier supplying too little power!

So I'll upgrade the speakers, and if no improvement, I'll have to upgrade the head unit then. Better add this to the ever-growing list!

Remap takes priority though!

I fitted a columbus(rns510) to car. This caused major flaw in sound quality as speakers distorted when volume is at 35%.

So much so I blew a rear speaker and tweeter. I have since upgraded to some ground zero components which fit perfect and sound amazing.

I only did rear speakers as this is where system lacked and distortion was coming from.

The rns 510 has 25rms second stage amp.

So much so I blew a rear speaker and tweeter. I have since upgraded to some ground zero components which fit perfect and sound amazing.

I only did rear speakers as this is where system lacked and distortion was coming from.

The rns 510 has 25rms second stage amp.

I can assume your BASS and TREBLE on the radio where turned up to the max.

I'm yet to see someone blow there factory speakers or amp, unless turning their bass+treble to max then turning the loudness dial up.
that = certain death for Speakers and Radio.

to the original poster. I too am guessing your over powering sound is coming from your sounds settings turned up in the car to compensate for our lack of sound with the older RCD300/500 series radio's.


Hell my factory speaker in my old MK4 and now for a few months in my mk5, happily ran at 150WRMS into the factory speakers front and rear.
Happily shows it's not lack of power problem. More so a speaker settings being adjusted outside of their physical realm of ability.

Great, thanks, so how do you turn the bass and treble down on these then?

RCD300/500,

From memory is the sound button. Click on it and you should be presented with bass and treble, then adjust them back to the line in the middle for each.

You may even have a "middle", then adjust that one to the middle too. Trying to remember as i have not played with that version radio in over 8 months.

See how the stereo goes, then reasses from there.

My RCD310 can happily play till approx 70% volume with no issue's.

This was not the case as it only messed up rear ns door speakers. However as said my car is a vrs and not a gti so rear speakers may be better in the GTI.

The vrs has smaller speakers in rear than up front.
