Brakes .... again
« on: March 20, 2012, 04:49:58 pm »
Vw tell me im in need of new front discs and pads and I'm looking at a £250 bill. I'm thinking that if I'm going to spend that, I may as well stick in another £200 and get an upgrade. I'm guessing it'll be a 312mm r32 set or similar for improved braking at minimum expense (I can't afford BBKs etc)

The r32 and s3 kits seem to fetch a premium on eBay.  I was wandering if you can get the same brakes off another car, ie 312mm brakes offan a4 or similar that won't be affected by the s3 premium? Any ideas? Ideally looking for a straight swap for my mk5 gti brakes.

I would consider brakes from other manufacturers if It wasn't too much hassle to get them to fit. Ideas gratefully received

R32 brakes are 345mm

GTI brakes are 312mm

Upgrade wise if you're just after performance and not too fussed by looks I'd get some Boxster fronts with an NQSBBK mounting kit over OEM discs. For a tatty pair of calipers this will be within budget. If you're after looks as well then you'd need more for a caliper refurbish

If you arent tracking your car id just keep the oe brakes. My car has oe pads and discs and for fast road use are more than upto the job with circa 265-270 bhp. Never once faded on me. Track days they would fade without doubt. As Sy says, jon tfsi happens across a lot of brake sets and worth a pm if thats the route you choose to take.
