Price has got nothing to do with it, Nickyboy - Nobody is asking you to part with your money! We're discussing and enjoying a very good car - The Golf R. You've illustrated very well what your own taste is in cars - Have you driven or even been driven in either the Evo X or Nissan? There's more to it than just speed and value for money. "Madness" for you to spend your money on a Golf R but not for others who have the funds available.

I'm sure it's a fantastic car. Build quality throughout will be exceptional. I just wouldn't spend 42 grand on one, when that budget opens up a whole new league of options, outside of the family hatchback range.

Irrelevant.

Le Buyer...... has 40k in his pocket.... wants a golf.... buys a Golf R.

I don't see a problem...  :stupid:

It's still a Golf!  42 grand for a Golf is unbelievable. I think the majority of motorists would agree with that. If you can afford it and happy to pay that then hey who cares what anyone else thinks. Enjoy  :happy2:

A million pounds is a lot of money for a car... but people still bought the veyron.

:signLOL: Albeit the Veyron being VAG, a few parts aren't interchangeable with a Golf

I said I wouldn't pay 42 grand for one, not because I think it's poor value against the competition,(and there isn't much, let's be honest) but because the same car is now available with it's worst depreciation hit already done, and as such an 18 month old R would be an amazing buy.

If you're in the market for a 40k new car, and you want a performance hatch, there's nothing to touch it really. Can't imagine how much an RS3 would be once you've got all the toys on it!

....Over £50k for the spec I would have.

There's only two questions to be asked when buying a car:

1) - Is it the car I desire? And it doesn't matter how rational or irrational the factors are.

2) - Can I afford to buy and run it?

It's just like falling in love - Do/did you apply a check list? - I hope not!

Beautiful car, exactly how I would have spec'd it. The only thing I find myself not liking now is the DRL's on the lower grills, I much prefer them on the mk6 GTI xenons. But that wouldn't put me off getting one.

Only thing that might now (after seeing it this morning) is the RS3 sedan if they ever release it here

That is the dogs - love the R in that colour, understated quality compared to the jap stuff. Spend your money on what brings you pleasure rather than what other people think you should and enjoy. Hope they make the polol r!

Im with you Ian on this.  Ive never really been a fan of the Golf, and ever since the R models cam eout i was always a big 'id only get the Rocco R', but after driving the Golf R, i was 100% converted.  Even the wife was impressed.

dodgy vinyl job on the one i had though

With a little haggling you could get one of these http://www.bmw.co.uk/bmwuk/bmwauc/details/0,,1156___ask-2%40adm-xx,00.html?ch=_V0JTS0c5MjAyMEU2OTgyNzM=&btp=1x12-null

I'd take an 18 month old R for 25K, and spend the balance on getting my Mk5 stripped out, roll-caged, K04 Stage 3 converted and turned into a track day weapon!

Really want an R as my next car, altho I do think that the Deep Blue Pearl looks a lot nicer in the flesh, then Rising Blue.

Just a nice pic to show off the colour even when dirty:

^ This was the car I had a friendly fast 'convoy' with the other day.
