Reliable big torque & BHP
« on: April 01, 2012, 01:32:25 am »
Not sure if this has ben asked before but here goes......................I've done the normal stuff (some stuff still sat in garage waiting to be fitted but I do have them!!)  uprated HPFP, suspension, NQBBKS, TT wishbones, uprated bushes, uprated clutch & LSD, the only thing I aint got is a KO4/S3 engine, now I don't really want to muck about with engine transplants unless nessary, but what I need to know is what could I realistically get (BHP/Torque) from my current engine, or is it more cost effective in getting a S3/K04 transplant?  I'm after reliabilty but big power.....I don't want to sell the MK5 and get a f*rd focus ST, but I want to be able to give them a good run for there money! I really like the idea of a almost standard MK5 Golf blowing away some quick/high powered/high cost cars!
Black 2007 GTI Manual, Stage 3 K04, R32 Bumper/Exhaust, WALK, adj rear ARB, KW1's, Twintercooler, Twintake, 18's (winters), 19's (summer) modified dectane LED rear lights, NQSBBK, Forge dump valve, Xenon look headlights with 5000k HID, 3" downpipe with sports cat, TT wishbones, uprated HPFP, Sach Uprated Clutch, Quaife LSD, VT & THS Engine Mounts.
To be fitted: Reverse Camera & uprated headunit.

with a ko3 gti sitting around 280bhp, would match a stage 3 ST i would say. Be down to driver but if you have a diff etc as well should see them off.
If you want to leave them then ko4 would be way to go id imagine. If you want more then id look at evo's etc. Something more set up to handle the power.

Well i was planning to get strengthened internals in my AXX engine, then i found a cupra engine to fit while the other engine got built. truth is the Cupra/S3/ED30/golf 6 R/Scirocco R engine is the best solution as you easily will exceed the amount an engine like that cost when rebuilding your AXX/BWA engine, and you'll still need the S3 cams and a better flowing head which means further expenses to reach same level as you get by buying the S3 engine. i have 367bhp and 517nm for now i'm happy  :innocent:

Over the top mod list ;o)

The engine in a K03 GTI is far stronger than a focus ST engine. They are forever cracking cylinder liners - even on standard engines

My stage 2+ could keep up with the stage 2 Focus no issues at all.  Same goes with the stage 2 VXRs, if anything id have said mine had the edge and had a more progressive power delivery.

Stage 2+ K03 will be able to latch onto a Focus RS Mk2 and stay there

until you hit a bend

My stage 3 ST was 310bhp and 370lb/ft torques so would be pretty surprised if the gti would keep up just from the figures. ST stage 2 more likely

My greatest fear with my focus so thought I'd sell while I had no problems! Did love the car though and do miss it. But I have been there and done that now so now I'm well happy with my gti!

Am in the process of doing the k04 conversion ATM can't wait to see the outcome, am sure on a straight road even the new m3 e92 wouldn't get far knowing its limited to 155 mph and has 295 lbs torque lol
GTI MK5 with all the gooodies

Stage 3 is realistically 295-300hp on the ST, I loved my ST but the K03 was so much more flexible and usable and at stage 2+ it was just as quick despite the 10-15hp deficit.  Plus a stage 2+ is 275-280hp on a tight dyno, but thats just looking at peak figures.  stage 2+K03s have a really good plateau of power from about 5000-redline so its not a peaky delivery at all.

The same can be said of the Ed30s.  Stage 2+ Ed30s with 330-360hp happily smash 400Hp Mk2 Focus RS's both on 30-130 and 1/4 mile days.  Its all about the delivery

What's the total cost roughly to get a standard GTi to stage 2+ spec?

if you want a full 280Hp

one of the top 3 intakes £350
TBE £1100
HPFP £350 for autotech, £700 for APR
Intercooler £700
Neuspeed discharge/charge pipes £250
Stage 2+ remap from one of the big tuners £4-500

If you add water meth injection i reckon 290-300hp is on the cards

BUT thats needs chassis work if you want to put that to the tarmac

gti engine with K04 is reliable up to 340 bhp on long term basis with ed30 I would think 370ish bhp, anything above would be playing with fire really.... Volkswagen racing team had tuned gti up to 330 bhp for a reason I would think, but Steve who bought this car would be able to say more

As Sy says, to handle the extra power you also need suspension mods....  And better brakes!

That's why I got rid of mine, sick of living in fear :sad1:

Do miss that awesome engine note though

Or just get a pipewerx DP & sports cat instead of the TBE and save yourself £600  :happy2:
