Ester based engine oils - overkill for road use or not?

Noticed opie have these for sale at slightly dearer prices to quantum III and the like, and are supposed to provide better protection against shear forces, etc. Anyone use ester based? Discuss

Most of the Silkolene range is ester based and in the Subaru world that stuff is gold.

But not sure if they are VW approved though

Millers CFS here.
They're more expensive for a reason but tbh I'm thinking of buying one of the cheaper ester synth oils and changing more often.

Go for the cfs 5w40 nt.  It's their new nanotech version and works very well in the tfsi engine.

I think I'm in the overkill camp to be honest.

How would you know how well your oil is/was performing?  You really can only accept the marketing blurb and continue blindly assuming all is well.

I can hand on heart say that for an oil to get an OEM approval it has to go through a lot of testing.  I've been to the TOTAL research centre at Solaize and seen the dyno rooms with new engines on test.  In the marine environment we normally get about 6000 hours (Typically a year) of testing and obviously satisfactory results before the OEM will give us an approval.

grade 5 ester based stock is one of the best. I've been using silkolene pro s 5 - 30 for the past few years. Car runs perfectly.
