Confused with all headunit types!
« on: March 16, 2012, 07:43:05 pm »
Hi guys well let me first say I've tried searching about it all myself and im not really getting anywhere so thought I'd make a post where hopefully all my questions can be answered.

Firstly I have a 2005 GTI with the standard cd player (and 6cd changer)

1 - What are my options for satnav/touchscreen and what model is best and worst? Could somebody state the model numbers in order and a brief description of the differences.

2- Also are they plug and play i.e. straight swap? If not then what would I need for each of these to work in my 2005 GTI

3 - do these have iPhone compatability, and will they still work with my cd changer.

Apologies for the noob questions but I am all so new to this an looks like there are many options. Hope somebody could help.
Much much appreciated.

Rob :-)

RNS510 is the all singing all dancing Sat Nav Touch Screen.

eBay sellers will have you believe they are plug and play but a proper installation requires coding to the car.

I believe the RNS510 can be successfully fitted and used without coding, unless the car has a multifunction steering wheel and/or highline display  :happy2:

I know that my RCD510 works just fine without any coding...

If you get the RNS 510 I can guarantee it will be one of the best mods you could ever buy for your car.

Absolutely amazing bit of kit!

You will need a Bluetooth module if you want to connect your iPhone.
(you will need the correct model number)

Also with the RNS 510 try to get the latest version with LED screen. The versions go from A,B,C..... and I think they are on F or maybe even G now (not sure)

For Extra help there are a few members here that really know there stuff. (VRStu, MortyGtdi,Eddie-NL)  :notworthy:

They will generally work but will have stored fault codes.

Don't be put off by some of the ''after market'' ones either tho. Got a Pioneer in mine which has full post code search built in blue tooh, dvd player etc.

i like the RNS but i am yet to upgrade my headunit, I wan't an after market unit, i've always had Pioneer as i like there stuff but it requires lots of extra bits that can make it expensive.

I hate the crappy 4 x 20w amp in all the RCD / RNS headunits, it's why i won't get one.

Gene, what did you get and what did you need to get aswell to fit? Fitting kit etc?

edit: doh this post is already 10 days past :(

Yeah I'll probably look to get an aftermarket double din.
Would also be interested in what adapters are needed etc.

Don't forget the Kenwood DNX520VBT which has a decent amp built in plus pre-outs and is a plug and play straight into the dash.. We have one in our 2011 Polo and really like it.

I have a Zenec NC2010 and love it.
I've just realised the other day that numbers/names come up on highline display when calling with bluetooth.
Not so long ago I posted some pics up here http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,43748.msg508087.html#msg508087

There's loads to choose from, including some excellent OEM HU's, so figure out what you want spec wise before jumping in (bluetooth, satnav, camera, sub connectivity etc).
Used to have Edition 30 - number 009 and a GT TDI 140.
Now have an S4 B8 Avant (stage 2)

Rns-510 is great if u want to stay oem but aftermarket is the way to go with the better sound quality your looking in the same price as the Rns-510 for a really good aftermarket one I wouldn't go for he zenac ones as they are over priced
All your need is the Canbus if u have mfsw controls a adaptor for the wiring loom connector, the twin fakra antenna also the fascia and your all set

I got a still in warranty Zenec for less than the price of a second hand RNS510 with no toys, depends where you buy.
