New buyer.... Service frequency mk5GTI?
« on: April 10, 2012, 02:31:02 am »
Hi

Looking to buy mk5GTI. At what age or mileage should the cambelt and water pump be changed? Looking at a car with 34000 miles aged 2005.

Any buying tips?

Thanks  :happy2:

For peace of mind (read wallet damage limitation if the belt break should break) cambelts should be changed in accordance with VW's current advice; every 4 years or 40,000 miles.  It's not necessarily the mileage that can increase the probaility of failure but also how the car is driven and time elapsed between changes as rubber degrades over time.  The tensioner should also be changed at the same time.

It's not entitrely necessary but a wise precaution to change the waterpump at the same time as you can normally negotiate a good rate on this while the belt is off and the pump is under £35-ish.  You would feel pretty sick if the pump then started leaking or making noises some time after changing the belt as it all has to come off again to rectify.

Hope this helps.

Advertised at just over £8500. Heated Leather seats,. 5 door, Sunroof, 2 owners, CD changer. I'd not pay  over £8k though.

3 seaters seem a good £500 cheaper.
