Leaking cylinder head cover Seal?
« on: April 11, 2012, 12:04:43 am »
Looking for some advice please. I took the engine cover off today on my stock edition30 to change the air filter. Noticed some signs of a leak from the cylinder head cover seal. The PCV also looked a bit messy. The screws holding the original F revision PCV on all needed tightening a little (replacing the PCV with the current N revision tomorrow). Will also be changing the spark plugs so I'll if any oil has got down there.

Cars done 22k miles and is running with no obvious issues.

Should I worry about the oil around the cylinder head cover seal or just wipe it off and keep an eye on it?

Shot of the staining on the cylinder head cover:

Staining from around the back also on the cylinder head cover:

Lastly where I've wiped off some.

Many thanks
Ron

Check the screws are fastened securely, as I've had oil usage issues, traced it to the back of the engine cover, oil was leaking from the rear, very hard to spot. Changed the gasket , but also found the rear screws on the cover were loose apon changing the gasket. Oil consumption stopped completely now. :happy2:

Many thanks everyone, I've cleaned it all off now and will keep an eye on it. It's realy not alot on there just surprised me when I got the engine cover off. Oil usage on the car is quite reasonable, 250ml to 500ml every 4 or 5k.

I've just replaced my F revision PCV with the current N revision, also about to replace the original bosch factory spark plugs with OEM NGK's, air filter and do an oil change. Looking forward to seeing how it runs. Had minor misfires showing occasionally on VCDS, never enough to trip a fault though.

I'll check the cylinder head cover bolts to check there all torqued up, 10nm I beleave they should be.

I also got some of the coilpack grease that according to ELSA should be re-applied to old coilpacks when fitting new plugs (new coilpacks come pre greased). £20 for a small tube from dealer :surprised: (part number: G 052 141 A2)

Cheers
Ron
