No Shell V Max - doing any damage using regular unleaded??
« on: April 14, 2012, 11:54:04 am »
Morning all,
With the recent petrol idiocy, my local Shell Petrol stations have no High octane V Max. Am I doing any damage to my car using regular unleaded? The car certainly feels a bit less responsive....
Thanks.

In a word no as the ecu will adapt to the lower octane.

The GTI has a FSI engine which will happily adapt to lower octane fuel. Just don't be surprised by the difference in power and mpg.

The GTI isn't just a machine. It's very much a living, breathing thing.

Jesus, you put normal petrol in your car?! Are you mad, I'm surprised you even made it off the forecourt!

:signLOL: but I don't think he's been on the forecourt recently as it's been called V Power for at least a couple of years now.

In reply to my learned friends, I've just come back from the States, a bit jet lagged and having missed most of the queuing at petrol stations in my area of South London only to find no V Power at the Shell. And yes, my mistake - V Power rather than V Max. (silly me) you know what I meant however.
The supposed extra clean burn of the better fuels are preferable surely; I know certain people rate the supermarket fuels due to turnover and regular replenishment of their tanks v the little less used petrol stations stock.
Not everyone reads the forum every day nor uses the search function before posting a question. No need for the spiky comments chaps - we're all on the same team.

As above Paul, it will be fine. You might fine the car feels a bit flat though due to the engine retarding the timing.

How was the states?  :notworthy:

I always ran my gti on 95ron, don't fancy paying more but I read on here how great v power is and u get more mpg and better performance so for 2 weeks I tried it and all I can say is didn't notice more power only difference is how much quicker the fuel gauge goes down! It really did drink more and my girlfriend did the same in the cooper s and she said it used more, not used it since con if u ask me, petrol is petrol similar to bottled water I suppose why pay more for something that does the same job"my opinion"

Not sure about the MPG gain but mine is much perkier at the top of the rev range on 99RON than 95RON. the bhp gains are dyno proven for using 99RON Super Unleaded (Shell / Tesco).

I always use Tesco super (my car is now mapped to 99RON) and haven't lost any Mpg over using normal unleaded. This has been proven on numerous long journeys.

IMHO, it all depends on wat sort of map u have and if its 'customed' to the higher grade petrol!? Mine (today) has been built around 99 ron, have already seen better mpg, by bout 4, so proof is in the pudding I guess!
