4mm - time to change pads?

Hi,

Hoping someone can help - my rear pads have about 4mm left - what mm should you typically change at?

Also, does the Mk5 GTI have brake wear sensors?

Yeah thanks buddy - I guess you also change your tyres when they get to 6mm

Considering new pads have about 12mm of material on them then at 4mm they are 75% worn so i wouldn't say that is bad advice.

You might be wise to take the attitude of your user name! I.e be a bit diplomatic in your replies when someone is trying to help.

It has a brake wear sensor in the left front pad.

i do roughly 50k miles a year for business as such i feel that if a component that is life saving such as brakes is close to the end of usefull life just change them they are not expensive and perform a vital role when called upon. but each to their own

Just had the car serviced at a dealer and annoyed that they didn't give me a heads up.

Anyhow, I'll change the rears.

I just had mine replaced and they had 3-4mm left on them. Better to change them whilst the are still working 100% rather than risk the performance tailing off and ending up with no rear brakes.

Rear pads can go down a lot further I'd have thought considering they don't get used as much as the front

You'll find that folks on this forum will bend over backwards to help each other and of course they'll give up doing so if someone starts getting stroppy in response.

Unfortunately VW dealers vary but a good one would have informed you. Actually, I thought they were required by law to do so regarding tyres and brakes. I use aftermarket brakes and pads but don't the OEM have visible wear slots?

Better safe than sorry, mate, but Chungster's point is a valid one regarding rear pads. Keep a regular close eye on them anyway
