That smoke looks more blue to me !
How many miles has the turbo done ?
By the way, my 2004 GT 140 tdi is losing water as well, going to swap the egr cooler this weekend to see if it makes a difference - I'll keep you posted. My turbo (2nd one) is also now giving the siren noise but thats another story !
Never had these kind of problems with the 7 mk2 GTi's I used to have - that's modern VW's for you.

Yeah the smoke has turned more bluish now :( Vw said they'd charge me £90 to do a full diagnostics if I leave the car for a full day on Friday. Might do it to pinpoint out the exact cause. Toying with the idea of selling up even though I've spent so much on it. Can I ask how much the egr cooler cost you? Vw want £230 for one, apparently it's a dealer only part.

The OP has mentioned white smoke (water?) and now possible blue smoke (turbo failure, or could it be worn piston rings? That may only apply to petrols?)

Should I be worried if my car produces the odd amount of black smoke. It's a soot chucker  remapped and pushing somewhere in the region of 180-190 bhp. Little bit of smoke only when pushing hard, higher revs.

Sorry to the OP for going off topic, slightly.  :happy2:

Mmmmmmm £230 for a new cooler or £6 for a connector to delete the cooler??? Put it this way you do not need the EGR system at all it was only there same has the cat to lower emissions on the production line! I don't have any part of the EGR system or a cat and it flew through the MOT at VW Leeds.

If your thinking of replacing it then just pay your mechanic to take the cooler off altogether and get rid.

Hey Darren, could you PM me or just state on here what I'd need to do and what parts I'd need to do the EGR Cooler/system delete?  Could be an option for me to take.

I'll try and get some better pics for you of where every thing is but if you look on Darkside developments webby you can see the specific parts you need.

Hello Gents,
Having similar issues with "Water loss" and i am also mapped up

No smoke as such, unless under load (black) id expect that from a Diesel. No turbo noise either. Would this EGR cooler be a good option then ?

Seems to be a pretty cheep fix  :happy2:

Stevw1, it could be the cylinder head?

Does anyone know if the car is safe to drive if its the cylinder head, EGR Cooler or Turbo? I haven't used the car for a week now but my sister needs her BMW back so i'll have to drive it again. VW can't fit me in at all until end of next week..

Been driving my car with the head faulty for the last 3 years :happy2: the turbo not so much not good if you know for defo its going to bust at some stage soon. Egr cooler wont do any damage either it can drop coolant into the cylinders but it just burns off when you start the car.
