Let's talk Load Ratings...
« on: April 16, 2012, 03:22:04 pm »
Hi guys, I want to put semi slicks on over summer but wanted the R1R not the R888.

The R1R only has a load rating of 88 not 92.

Having discussed with h4rdy, insurer seems to be saying is not a problem as long as you inform them but how much significance should you put on a load rating ie on the road will it be dangerous/disadvantages of running a tyre with 88 over 92?  :rolleye:

Thanks in advance

An 88 load rating tyre can safely carry 560kg per tyre so unless you load your car with lead to surpass a gross weight of 2240kg (560x4) then you should have nothing to worry about.
Without traction power is nothing!

Cheers Ayoub, just wanted to double check as, god forbid, dont want to make a claim and discover that the insurer loses the plot because have not fitted the correct load rating tyre to the vehicle as per out of the factory. I will call Greenlight before making purchase  :drinking:

If the speed rating for the tyre is correct for your car then you should have no worries about using it.
Without traction power is nothing!

I really dont think it is as simple as that, the tyres are not loaded equally, ie; the fronts carry a fair bit more weight, and then the fronts dont carry and equal division of the weight.

The Incorrect load rating is not recommended by michelin hence why they don't recommend225/40/18 88 y xl

so basically are we saying anyone running R1R's or any semi slicks not with a 92 rating run a risk of tyre failure and wipe out? If so look like will be plumping for some R888's as they seem to be the only ones with a 92 rating  :scared:

88 load rating should be ok. If you think about it your car weighs what ~1400kgs

Would the car really have over 1100kgs of that over the front axle / front half of the car??

I don't think the FtoR weight distribution is at 79/21 !!!!

But don't take my word for it though, just something I've looked into in the past!  :happy2:

manufactors of tyres say you can put a higher speed rating on but not a lower load rating for the car
