They guarantee them for the 1st 3 years  from new and will replace them under warranty as long as there's no kerbing etc but after that they don't want to know iirc

Absolutely Robin, I couldn't agree more. Having learnt a lot about my wheels over the past 6 months on here, I have come to the same conclusion. They have been designed because they look amazing in the showroom and help to sell the car, and little thought has gone into the longevity of the wheel. As such I'd say they're not fit for purpose, and VW should take some responsibility for this. Has the forum ever put any pressure on VW in the past over this?

....Yep, and not just this forum. The problem is common to all marques of cars which have this finish.

Volkswagen (I don't know about others) have in some cases replaced FOC Monza's but only if they haven't been able to claim that the owner hadn't kerb'd or damaged them first - They have wriggled and there have been a significant number of claims. You would have thought that they would have dropped the finish for the Mk6, but oh no they haven't  :stupid:

However, there are folks, some on here, who religiously clean their wheels more often than might be described as 'normal' and they haven't had the problem. Greeners is one, for example.

Like you say, it's a very attractive feature which can sell the car.

I guess that's fine If you've had from from new, but I haven't, and it would seem that once the WW is in the alloy, it's just a matter of time before it comes back post-refurb. I also don't want to have to worry obsessively over cleaning them, and be constantly inspecting them. Wasted driving time IMO!  :driver:

I'm admitting defeat and am going to either get new rims that will fit my new tyres or get these refurbed and powdercoated. Life's too short!

Robin's thread inspired me to get mine powdercoated in smoked chrome, and I don't regret it for a moment.  I love the 18" Monzas and the fact that they're not just any old alloys, but a feature of the Golf GTI.

I'm told that my wheels really catch the light as the car moves, but I'm not letting anyone else drive it so I'll never know!

Shadow blue DSG 5 door with leather, sunroof, 18" Monzas, MFSW.
Full list of mods:  Seat inserts and a VW bottle opener.  Each worth 20bhp.

SCR show us a pic!

Must say I don't have the time to clean and wax wheels all the time....though the original finish looks amazing!!!

I've needed to get mine refurbed for the last 2 years not got round to it yet the idea of getting them back to the proper anthracite diamond cut would be the ideal but the longleivity and change in sharp edges due to extra material cut off worries me and will be going powder coat and smoked chrome seems good as robin has done but will all be down to tne colour the specific refurber uses!

Ian if you do something local ask them if there is a deal to be done for 8 wheels would have to be drive in drive out.

5Dr Black GTI, DSG, Leather, Xenons. Retrofitted - Cruise, RNS 510, MFSW, Armrest, Skoda BT, 6cd changer, Monza II's, VW speaker upgrade kit, Lux pack, High-line, new CAN gateway, Polar FIS info display, R32 tinted rear lights, RVC

To Come...NQSBBK, highline CCM.
