The eternal conundrum! Which tyres to plump for.. arrrghhhhh

Goodyear eagle f1 or michelin pilot sport 3 are the best tyres ive owned i have toyo t1 proxes sport and i dont rate them at all compared to the michelins or goodyears but i dont know if thats due to tyres being 215 stretched on 8.5 j

Been using Toyo T1 for 5.5 years now, good tyres and at around £98 per corner excellent value.

I have the T1 Proxes Sport on all 4 corners and never had a problem with them. Always given excellent grip and was even good on the snow.

I had first had Toyo's on my 205 Gti and then on my MK3 Golf GTi.

I thought they were good, but I seem to think have seen people say on here that the road tyres went up to much compared to the semi slick options? Tony Danza maybe has experience of them?

Goodyear F1v2 are superb. Plenty enough grip for enthusiastic road use. I can't comment on how they behave on track.

Another vote for GY F1 ASY2, but I've not tried them in 18", only 17".

F1 v2's on the rear

R1R's on the front - They are a superb tyre for the road and are amazing in the wet contrary to popular belief. ( below approx 5 DegC they do not perform as well in the wet though) I love them and the turn in and steering response is far better than any other tyre i have tried. The F1's are nearly as good in the bends and for turn in but not as good at getting the power down.

The R1R's are only an 88 rating so this may be an issue in the event of an insurance claim? But they are constructed for motorsport so i have no worries about them on a mk5 platform.

The F1 v2 are great in a corner and quiet which is why i chose them for the rear. Most of the tyre noise i find comes from the rear.

Out of curiousity through what ambient air / road / tyre temperatures have you run this combo? I've used 888s on a couple of car, both on road and track, and my worry would be that although acceptably well matched for grip at low to moderate temperatures, when the more track orientated rubber gets properly up to working temperature and gains significant grip, the road tyre will start to lose it.

On a side note, any idea what the tfsi is like for oil surge? On track I've known folk swap to 888s / track orientated rubber, and have issues with oil starvation in other vehicles.

There is a very nice ballance for my driving style withe the tyre combo i have at the moment and my ESP doesnt kick in.

A poor match of tyres could well be dangerous i guess, especially if pushing on

Very good point, the car is very predictable so far this year. i had R1R's on the front last year all summer and autumn and they were predictable also. This was with Nexen's on the rear (no i didnt choose them they were free with the wheels)

On the track there could well be issues with mixing track and road tyres.

How much better are R1R in the wet than R888?  Im considering swapping them round to see how it behaves

Try Avon ZZ5, they are superb. Asymmetric tyre, and currently running on my Megane R26. Just scrubbed in they have huge grip in wet and dry, longevity is supposed to be good also.

Because Im thinking of changing the GTI I wanted some reasonably priced but decent tyres a mate of mine works for a tyre retailer and recommended Cooper so had them fitted. Im impressed better than the previous Dunlops, very quiet, good in the wet no squealing when cornering and so far the wear rate seems good and at £70 each fitted a bit of a bargain
