Coilpack Fire
« on: April 20, 2012, 06:28:41 pm »
A warning to people who havent took there mk5 gti back for the coilpack recall/ callback. Last week 1 of my coilpacks decided it wasn't playing ball and set on fire.
luckily i havent got an airbox on my car. instead i have an intake system. but had i had an airbox chances are that the coilpack would of set fire to that an maybe the car aswell.
Vw were very helpfull an got my car in for the next day even though they were fully booked and changed all the coilpacks and did a full check to make sure anything wasn't damaged. luckily it wasn't. But if you havent had the callback checked yet i strongly recomend that you do soon

How do you know if they have been replaced? And/or do you just ring vw up and ask?
Thanks craig

Thanks for your help  :drinking:

You can find your local retailer on VW UK's site, just enter your postcode and it'll tell you the closest ones and if you click on the dealer's site it'll show you the opening hours.

Glad it wasn't more serious mate.

I'd be taking it up with VW UK for some sort of compensation for putting your life at risk  :fighting: :fighting:

Thanks for this post - it reminded me to get mine done.  In case anyone else is dithering - here's my experience.

I phoned VW Croydon on Monday.  Their records showed that it hadn't had the recall, and booked it in for today (Wednesday).  I dropped it off at 9.30, and mentioned that I might have to collect it tomorrow if it wasn't ready before the school run.
I got a phone call at 1pm saying they were just finishing.  They advised me on brake pads / discs / wipers / etc etc, but not in a hard sell kind of way.  When I collected it at 2pm, it had been washed and vacuumed.

All for free.  Parts alone would have been £96 inc VAT.  Dealers get a bad press sometimes, but I'll give them credit here.
 :congrats:

Shadow blue DSG 5 door with leather, sunroof, 18" Monzas, MFSW.
Full list of mods:  Seat inserts and a VW bottle opener.  Each worth 20bhp.

cheers Robo, i've never checked whether mine have been replaced so will do so this week. How old is your car and what mileage have you done out of interest?

SRC - good to hear a good news story about someone's experience with the stealers. It does of course depend on how many swirl marks they've put on your paintwork having used an old chamios and one bucket which by the end of the wash was full of grit
