Yeah my lights seem to have a mind of their own also they seem to be very sensative which can be a right pain at times. Mine also come on when i do over 80mph on the motorway.

Bright sinset or sunrise can confuse it slightly - I dont find it that much of an issue though.

Is this early in the morning?  I think the system compares the inside and outside light reading and can determine if its around sun rise / sunset and can throw the lights on a bit 'early...

It's about 7:30 in the morning.  Sun is fairly bright but low so I guess the interior could be darker.

The auto lights are OK, at least they are always on when its dark (far too early sometime...) unlike the stupid wipers that are no where near sensitive enough

The autolights work fine on mine. tested them 2 days ago and they do come on at higher speeds

I'm happy with the autolights. As for the autowipers - if it starts to rain, I switch them on and leave them to do their job.

The GTI isn't just a machine. It's very much a living, breathing thing.

My lights seem a bit strange they came on today when it was sunny ( i was doing slightly over 70 lol) but then stayed on all the way home including going through 40 mph and 30 mph limits at the correct legal speeds.

They are often on when its bright too, without doing illegal speeeds

Do i have a problem with them or not ?

If on auto the come on when you go over 140kmph for more than a few seconds - 20 or 30, they will stay on until you have dropped under 40mph for more than 2mins - unless its raining or gets dark in which case that will override the turn off.

....Fortunately this happens only if your Automatic headlight control is switched on, which I never switch on.

Under the heading "Automatic headlight control" my 2005 (leather bound) Handbook says:

Quote
"The motorway function switches on the dipped headlights if the vehicle is driven at 140 km/h for longer than 10 seconds. The dipped headlights are switched off if the vehicle is driven at 65 km/h for longer than 150 seconds."

....I prefer having my LED DRL's, which automatically come on with ignition and I don't have to think about, to headlights telling others how fast I am driving.
