Awful metal on metal sound whilst driving
« on: April 23, 2012, 07:19:19 pm »
Hi Folks

Newbie here but been reading the forums since getting my 56 plate GTI in October last year which I must say has been phenomenal up to now!

I drove to work as normal this morning and all was fine, as I was pulling away from work this evening I heard the most evil sound which appeared to be coming from the offside rear. I have noticed that if the car has been sat for a day I sometimes hear a clunk as I take the handbrake off and pull away so possibility related. The thing is the noise happens constantly, the breaks work fine and the noise doesn't change when applying them. I decided to turn back and leave the car at work and as I drove back the noise got worse.

I'm wondering if the pads have gone and are welded to the discs? I did check for any score marks on the back disk but nothing was visible and if I remember rightly the car will let me know once the pads need replacing anyway. Has anyone else experienced anything similar?

Thanks in advance

Brin

stone caught between the splash guard and the brake disc.

just push the splash guard gently away from the brake disc, and it should fall out.

Thanks for the responses, the cars at work so will give that a go before I call the AA in the morning - you may have saved me some embarrassment!

Is the splash guard the bit which sits nearest to the centre?  :ashamed:

Thanks again

Brin

I've had the old stone stuck between the disc and splashguard thing twice now!. Just a gentle push and you might hear the stone as it hits the ground!

I had the stone thing last week as it happens. It's first time for me and did give us a scare. Thought the whole wheel bearing had collapsed! Got out gave a push on splash guard and out dropped the stone.

....Exactly what I first thought was going on!

A very good way to describe the noise, Mike  :happy2:

I had this tonight as I was leaving work. Me and my mate were on our knees looking to see which bit of the exhaust had come off!

I reversed very slowly on his suggestion and the stone must of just fallen out.

If this happens again, what bit is the splashgaurd? Does anyone have a pic of one please?  :happy2:
