No hosepipe ban down here in coastal West Dorset and it's been raining hard and almost non-stop since yesterday morning. My WeatherPro App (always very accurate) forecasts rain continuing until Saturday and then rain again constantly until Tuesday!

Well the hosepipe ban is well and truly in effect in South East London, and will probably be here for ages yet, even though it's been battering it down for as long as I can remember  :signLOL:

I decided that buying my 1st Karcher during the introduction of this ban was obviously not the best idea, and have had it now for over 2 weeks but haven't been able to use it.

I decided to fit a 210 litre water butt, and what do you know.........it filled up overnight  :signLOL: it has rained non-stop since then, and I'm sure I could have filled up 1000's of more litres!!!

Anyway, the question I have is how much of this 210 litres would I use to wash my car, would it use it all???  :popcornsoda:

Jussa - that Tank is more than enough, I wash my car with approx 1&1/2 bucket to soak, 1 bucket to snow foam, 1 bucket to hand wash and then about 2 buckets to rinse off with the karcher feeding directly from them so probably only about 25/30 litres if that?! If you need any help setting the thing up to feed from the tank just let me know  :happy2:

Hi Matt, just ordered all my cleaning goodies from Elite car care, so when they arrive I'll give you a shout - never used the Karcher before, never mind a water butt as well  :happy2:

Meh

The fact that the hosepipe ban is in place makes no diffrence.

i used mine every week, watch them try and fine me and see what happens in court reguarding the fine, typical case of scare tactics they cant leagly inforce a fine, simlar to how private car parks try but cant enforce it by law

....That's an interesting point - Has anyone in the UK actually been taken to court and fined under a hosepipe ban ruling?

I don't think they have. It seems threat is enough.

As for water butts, fine but you need to ensure no debris gets into PW or you'll be spraying dirty water over your car. You can get filters that connect to the end. I'd advocate this even if the butt was kept indoors and had never been filled with rainwater.

The GTI isn't just a machine. It's very much a living, breathing thing.

Technically, for the ban/fine to be issued a NOTICE is given/served. Now, technically, a notice is....well, a notice. Your not legally obliged to read, understand or comprehend a notice...well not yet anyway. That is sure to change soon. The way a notice is enforced is by way of threat coercison...a fine or punishment. Im sure we are all familiar with these notices 'PLEASE DO NOT IGNORE THIS NOTICE' attached to our windscreens  :scared:

Can I just point out, this is not legal advice, I just have a rather unhealthy interest in the subject of Law.  :nerd:

x2

i am currently studying law in my spare time with the open university and often enjoy advising people were i can purely to 'stick it to the man' half of the police in this country have not got a clue and make things up as they go, the problem being while the public are uneducated and scared of these fools, they will carry on unlawfully punishing people and sweeping it under the carpet :stupid:

power to the people is the best policy, if everybody used their hosepipes these idiots empty threats would be exposed.

As I understand, a fine can only be ordered by a court.

I don't blame the whole Police service though - They are merely foot soldiers who are obliged to do as they are instructed and are uniformed Police the guys who are actually policing hosepipe bans? What letterhead does a Notice bear?

Ive used a pair of the wifes nylon pop-socks to filter any debris out going into the water-butt. one on the pipe where it connects to the down pipe and another inside the water butt where the water comes in. Cheap as chips.  :signLOL:

You'll get a letter first from the water company with threats of a fine. You'll have been reported by a good law abiding neighbour or they can tell by your usage if you on a water meter. It wont be the police knocking on your door. I think capital letters in any letterhead usually get peoples attention with regards to notices. Its just a play of words. I cant believe water companies can police everyones water meters and issue fines accordingly. A large amount of water used may be down to a water leak??? Playing on peoples fear is what they do best.  :scared:

....I realise what you mean by the expression "law-abiding" but isn't it all advisory rather than law anyway?

I have had the experience of a water authority/supplier threaten very harshly to withdraw my supply, but I resisted. They were obliged to accept my paltry monthly repayment offer and were unable to challenge it.

Most folks have to pay for water but water supply cannot be cut off. There is no life without water!

There hasn't been a hosepipe ban in my neck of the woods within living memory but my attitude is that I would carry on regardless. I only use a hosepipe to wash my car and only when it gets dirty, so that's probably once every 4-6 weeks. It's only if water supply became so short that it was an emergency that I would agree to the advisory notice.

I guess advisory is one angle you can look at it, yes. But contrary to popular belief, The Law is not Law. Its a set of rules, that accompany that what we already know not to do; commit harm, loss or injury or fraud, by way of primary or secondary legislation enacted by acts of parliament. We could break this down further but then it starts to get bit boring/ranty and starts challenging peoples belief systems. People are so insued by the system that they will fight to keep it in place.

Food for thought. Definition of Law, as it stands, "A given rule of society, by corporation of rule, enacted by primary and secondary legislation which given the force of law by consent of the governed"
