Car for sister
« on: April 28, 2012, 02:52:27 pm »
Need some advice peeps.

Lil sis inherited my 1999 fiesta, which has now rusted and rattles, and has reached 100k. Nowhere as solidly built as RedRobin's car. She's looking for an upgrade and wants to spend around £6000. She's still keen on hatchbacks. Gven that she drove the last one into a lamp post, it would need parking sensors either as standard or easily retrofittable.

Requirements:
 - max 5 years old. The newer, the better.
 - 5 door ideally
 - diesel or high mpg petrol
 - something more than 80bhp (the fiesta might only be 1.25-zetec but when I drove it, it beat my mate's new 1.4 polo).
 - reliability. The fiesta, apart from the rust, wasn't too bad mechanically.

She's vehemently against a Yaris, and TBH most jap cars (feck knows why!). I'd be more happy if it was a dealer-approved model as there's some degree of comeback if things go wrong.
Am open to ideas. The plan is to make a shortlist and then test drive them all.

Any help would be appreciated!  :drinking:

The GTI isn't just a machine. It's very much a living, breathing thing.

Just tapped what your after into autotrader and mostly is jap (i did have parking sensors in keywords) main ones that stand out and that were not Jap was the new Fiesta (a couple of 1.4 and 1.6 econetic come up), new Corsa's (various engines) and a couple of Fabia's. Trouble is these were just dealers and not ford, vauxhall and skoda themselves.

Hyundai i10. As cheap as motoring gets, and it's a fantastic little car with 5 doors with all the toys.

Best purchase I made.

I know they are both Japanese, but you can get an 09 Mazda 2 for that sort of money. Or an 07 Suzuki Swift Sport. Test drove both when the missus was looking for a change. The Swift is a great little drive, the Mazda is similar in character to the new Fiesta. The examples we saw were well-built and only showed minimal wear and tear. To my mind the Mazda has the better interior, but the Swift has 17" alloys and twin exhausts.....  :happy2:

Oh, and before anyone asks, she decided to spend the money on a new kitchen instead  :signLOL:

'57 DSG GTI alas now gone, but not forgotten....
Now motorway cruising in a 61 Mondeo Titanium X Sport 2.2 TDCi. 500+ miles to a tankful and bucketloads of torque :O Ok, it's not a GTI but it's fun... and that's what counts ;)
