Stage 2+ boost levels on a K04?
« on: May 01, 2012, 09:57:41 am »
As above guys, what type of boost do most stage 2+ K04 cars run? Regardless of tuner?

I've heard 1.5bar holding all the way but have seen/heard cars running more like 1.8+bar?

What's everyone's thoughts? What are K04's rated at?

21psi   2400-2540mb     more to come with 3bar map sensor and S3 ecu..

Its substained boost which is hard on turbos, a 1.8bar peak in the low down rpm aint too bad, its trying to hold that across the bad which will kill a turbo... but saying that I have not had a TFSI turbo fail on me nor do I know the safe limits or sure I say unsafe limits?  Other factors which play a huge part on boost and turbos failing are exhaust turbine back pressure and EGTs.

I know from R&D open loop testing the k04 can produce 30psi at 5500rpm but not yet got a time scale on how long for?  I will find out as soon as I buy my own k04 TFSi as the first thing I will do is find the limits of the turbo by running it maxed out in the name of R&D..

Not my map or tuning... but might be worth making contact with the owner of this video and see hold log the turbo lasted

Thanks for the info dude. If a turbo goes pop on me i'm not really bothered, i'd like to find the limits too!

Rick from Unicorn Motor Developments is mapping my car, i'm sure he has said he has spoke to you in the past about stuff? So i was just asking out of curiousity of what can be achieved...  :happy2:

I spoken to Rick a few times over on ASN and seen his input on the tuners forums, all I can say is that your in good hands there.    To make power you need to flow and flow safe, the more free flowing you can get your setup you can run less boost to make power.   On a hardcore BWA k04 setup I have cracked 400bhp but only by using water injection and shed loads of timing.

Peak boost makes peak torque numbers, so if you want a map to snap your neck and 370+lbft then aim for 25psi around 3000rpm, if you want more linear then flat line the boost to 21psi across the whole rpm range.  But there are lots of other factors to take into account during the remap session

Yeah i like it fairly agressive but i'll leave the technical stuff to Rick, i've known him for years and he really does know his stuff. Hopefully we can get a good set up. Cheers Nick.  :happy2:
