map trials - good or bad?

Im going stage 2 very shortly and am speaking to a dealer in both revo and apr,

are the trials a good thing or bad? I've heard that after the time runs out (i believe it was apr) it puts it back to stock and then lowers the settings a little to make you car feel more sluggish.

I want to stage 2 and no further as I don't want to be worrying about fitting hpfp's or intercoolers just yet and if the very worse happens and I need them I would rather just by the pieces and fit them myself to save money.

It is what it is. Of course the car will feel sluggish when compared.

Be wary of them as the software stays resident so if you then go to a less than thorough tuner it may cause what they would term as a problem.

I don't know what the current pros and cons of trial remaps are - There used to be some cons once upon a time.

It might be additionally helpful to phone JKM who are independent tuners and offer both Revo and APR. They will not pressurise you into a purchase. Speak to Kate or Jim and feel free to mention my name - 023 9263 9933.

Assuming you have a K03 GTI you won't need an aftermarket HPFP unless you fit an efficient high flow air intake. With Revo you can reduce the settings a notch to accommodate an OEM fuel pump while at Stage 2 with an aftermarket intake. I have direct experience of this setup.

Are you talking about going to TW?, have they got a RR for before and after readings?
Quite interested to hear your thoughts of both maps if you go with the trials!

Just been searching, apparently both revo and apr revert back to their equivalent stock map and try to get as close as possible to the oem stock map, and they admit there might be ever so slight differences which could also reflect why people felt their car was ever so slightly slower than originally.


I've already got decat, millie exhaust, intake and in the process of sorting a revision d valve so am more than ready to go stage 2 - like I mentioned I would only get a hphf if and when the time occurred.

Thats one thing that makes me like the idea of revo - being able to change particular settings with the sps unit.

Have you got a email there RR I don't have time to make a call and prefer things in writing so I can take my time reading it rather than keep having to ask someone to repeat themselves on the phone.

I trust the dealer as its reputation is good and they are long standing!

Im gunna do the trail for the sake of doing the trial but wondered if it was worth just skipping and going straight to a map

Oh and I don't think they have a rolling road but I think they might do datalogging in car on the road but don't quote me

Saturday I should be upgrading to Highline clocks  :P and getting my MDI sorted  :grin: so think i'll have to miss out on that!  :sad1:

I had the Revo trial which was good. After the trial ended I went elsewhere for the remap. Though they dyno'd my car before doing anything and the car made 201bhp (average over 3 runs). so I don't think the drop the performance to make them feel sluggish, it just does after having a map :)

Jim will probably be busy either in the workshop or out datalogging a car. Kate is the 'K' in JKM and knows her stuff as others will also confirm if asked.

APR vs Revo for a remap is not an easy choice - They are both good.

If you already have REVO then the upgrade is only £50 ish so it's hardly worth messing with a trial.  Not even sure they do specific trial software for between stages.
