Trading car in with cherished plates on?
« on: May 06, 2012, 06:25:01 pm »
Just wondering how a plate transfer would happen if i was to trade my car in? I've seen A3 i like the look of and i am probably going to look at it tomorrow. Only problem is that my car has a private plate on it, would the garage be able to swap this straight over for me?

Not straight away they wont , I believe the paperwork has to go to the DVLA first.

Are most garages wiling to do the exchange of plates onto a new car?

Yeah I would think so , they are getting a car sale off you after all! I think its £80 quid though , so they will probably charge you!

Just sort the plate transfer yourself. Nothing to stop you trading it, just means they can't really sell your car on until you get the v5 back.

You need to pay the DVLA for a number plate retention, I think it's about £105 if I remember correctly.  Give them a call and they'll talk u thru it.  You won't be able to sell your car straight away though unless the person buying it trusts u to send them on the log book when u get it back.

If the dealer goes to a local dvla office with your v5 too the transfer can be done instantly.

If its done by post it can take about a week to 2 weeks to get the tax disc through and you can put your plates on then

It's £80 to transfer a plate from one car to another and £110 to put it onto a retention certificate

I have just sent the paperwork away to put my plate onto my golf can't sell my old car until I get the v5 back for that

If your lucky they will sort it out for you and you can do a straight transfere.
Put my cherished plate on retention before I traded my last car in as it can be a pain with the V5 and the garage. DVLA issued a new reg (got super cheap plates of eBay) and got the updated V5 in less than 2 weeks then did the trade in. Just take all you paperwork to your local DVLA office and they will do the lot for you.

Some garages will buy the car off you. I have seen couple of examples were the garage want a further deposit orwill keep the second car key until you bring in the V5 for your old car.
My old car, I took the V5 in a week or two later.
