Hilton hotels iMacs
« on: May 13, 2012, 01:38:32 pm »
Has anyone stayed at a Hilton hotel that provides iMacs in the room?

I'm staying at the double tree in Amsterdam tomorrow and wanted to take my hard drive with movies on it but not sure If  it will connect to there mac.

Can also see me buying a mac after this trip too If they are as good as what people say.

I hate using my windows 7 laptop now after using an iPad and the laptop felt super fast before I used the iPad

They used to be called Mint Hotel before Hilton bought them late last year and renamed them. I stayed in the Birmingham one last year, the room was great as was the breakfast buffet. SWMBO fell in love with the iMac.

I think the mac should read your HDD and the files on it but it will probably depend on what format they are saved in to whether the iMac will read it.

I was more worried about them locking the computer to stop external devices being used.

Hopefully it will let me install vlc player too as most of the files are avi s

The breakfast was the main reason for booking the hotel I'm fed up of getting cold ham and cheese for breakfast when traveling

I don't think it has been locked from external devices as I plugged my iPhone into it to look at some pictures. IIRC they also have a free of charge film library you can use on the iMac as well so if it doesn't work there's still films you can watch.

You should be fine if the hdd is formatted as fat32. If NTFS then, afaik, a mac can't read files on that format.

I can't even remember what I formatted the hard drive to when I bought it 5 years ago.

Will find out tomorrow I suppose.

And I have a feeling my savings are going to take another hit when I get back

Just plug the hdd into your windows pc then look in computer management>disk management and you should see what file format you used.

A drive formatted with NTFS will still work with a MAC, but it will be read only. You will not be able to write anything to a NTFS partition.
If you are only going to be using it to watch movies or view stuff, then NTFS will work fine. If you want to work, or save anything to the drive, it will need to be FAT32 (4GB file size limit) or exFAT.

I stayed in the Mint in Manchester for a week and didn't have any USB issues.

We stayed at a City Inn  (may have changed name now) in Birmingham off Broad Street in Oct 2010 and they had iMacs there... was pretty cool and would choose to stay there again purely for that reason lol
