« on: May 14, 2012, 05:38:59 pm »
Just brought a private plate and
Stuck it on with three pieces of double sided tape / proper stuff for plates .back on no problem but the front because it as a site curve keeps popping of  on one side .
Any tricks to make it stick and moi don't want to drill it before any one says

You could always heat up your plate and set it to the curve required, when it cools down it should stay curved  :happy2:

Had the same issue with mine. They thin tape couldn't handle the curve. Halfrauds sell 6mm stuff that does the trick for curved plates - sticks out a wee bit further mind you.

I had exactly the same problem, so i bought some of these from Halfords:

Worked a treat :happy2:

Don't be afraid to bang loads of tape on and may have to hold it for a min or two with pressure. I put so duck tape on it walked away came back 10mins later pulled duck tape off and it was stuck :)

id recommend using some `tesa` double sided tape then sticking that to some of the foam tape, i found the quality of the foam tapes is hit and miss so covered it in some tesa and its not budged since  :happy2:

the tesa is holding quite a few things together on the car and in the house

Fair comment, but they would have to look pretty close to see that it is stuck on with the velcro.

....If you had the intent to nick a plate, or indeed anything else, wouldn't you check how it's fixed before then bothering to nick it with as minimum fuss as possible? It's called 'casing the joint'. Not all thieves are thicko's.

Not sure why they would want to nick my plate?

Never had one stolen in the last 25years(not to say it won't happen)I just thought the velcro was a good option as I had tried various methods and none had worked.

Ian, I agree it's unlikely but bad people nick your plate and stick it on another vehicle to confuse Police ID of the vehicle they are using in a crime.

I'm just playing devil's advocate and pointing out the downside of using velcro (and magnets) rather than advising not to use it. I chose not to use velcro for mine, especially after nicking and repositioning someone else's velcro attached plate for a joke.

Liking your car by the way. Had my Tornado Red GTi on a 55 plate for a few months and loving it. Future plans are to get an R-tech Re map and speak to VW about getting my front wings sorted as they are starting to bubble!

Cheers, Ian  :drinking:

You're in good hands with R-tech by all accounts. Front wings rust should be straight foward. If you have any problems with your VW dealer check out the thread about rust warranty on here. There's a PDF posted which shows that it's a known issue etc.
