greygti's.....tornado red mkv GTI
« on: May 14, 2012, 10:44:02 pm »
Hi all, picked up a 08 tornado red gti up in september 11 with 43k on the clock FVWSH one woman owner from new with a reasonable spec from lookers vw

(it's sitting on the B12 kit in this picture) i was to lazy to take a pic of it standard when we picked it up

Centre arm rest
Grey leather
winter pack
6 cd mp3 changer
cruise control
auto dip rear view mirror

modded spec so far:

Bilstein B12 sportline suspension kit
Jetex 3'' turbo back exhaust system (sport cat downpipe 200cell)
K+N Typhoon intake
Revision G diverter

next to be done:

Remap by nick at r tech 15/05/12
WALK
H+R anti roll bars
S3 FMIC
Wheels of some sort (haven't got a clue what !)

First off i already had a set of oem plugs and cambelt kit + water pump i had lying around so got these all fitted along with new coolant(it had its oil+ filter and air filter and cabin filter changed just before i bought it

next up i fitted a full Bilstein B12 Sportline kit (no pics of fitting)(fitted october 11)

Then i fitted a cat back exhaust as i like to be different i went for a 3'' jetex twin exit system (which went on like a dream) fitted december 11

Then i got the jetex 3'' sportcat downpipe (200 cell) and a 3'' non resonated middle pipe ,got that fitted and it sounds awesome !(sound clip to follow)

Then another package arrived .... k+n typhoon

excellent fitting bit of kit ,i know its not on the same level as an itg maxogen or forge twintake but its a step up from the factory airbox (sound clip to follow)

Next up i got the oil and filter changed on the gti

Then i changed the PCV and diverter valve

installed the revsion G diverter valve (as advised by nick at r tech) as a pose to a revision D

Then i fitted a revision N PCV

Oh and some more pics of how my gti is today i nearly forgot lol

Its getting mapped tomorrow by nick at r tech cant wait !

Just wondered why you were advised to replace the DV with Rev G and not the D? Looking at replacing mine and I was going down the D route.

Looking at getting re-map from R-tech in the near future.

Nice car  :happy2:

Could be a daft question, what are the benefits in changing your PCV? Its something that I havent done yet but i was unsure what would be gained?

Cheers, stu.

I was getting it mapped and the pcv is a know'n part to fail so for the sake of £25 and 10 minutes to fit i thought why not change it ,did the same with my diverter took it off and changed it before the car was mapped as they fail all the time no boost leaks etc

IIRC R-tech did some testing with the Rev D and found it to leak boost and for the Rev D to potentially crack. I'm sure one of the R-tech tuned guys will be along to clarify. Good luck with the map - always heard good things about R-tech :happy2:

Great result. I got 248bhp and 311lbft  at R-Tech from a map, K&N panel and pre-cat removed. I bet 262bhp feels great  :happy2:

Is your clutch slipping yet?  :surprised:

Interesting! I was starting to wonder if I have a boost leak, yet can't find any evidence on the boost pipes / hoses. Guess I'll whip the Rev D off and replace with a G (which looks like a rev C with a shroud around the diaphram).

The D is poor by design, IMO it was a revision quickly developed to resolve the rubber seals spliting issues  as seen on the early revisions.

1, There is a small .5mm plastic face on the DV mating to the alloy casting on the comp housing, this has to try and hold the boost back which is does to an extent but also bleeds the boot pressure off making the turbo work that bit harder and less efficient.

2, In side the D DV thre is a small soft plastic O ring which seals against the plastic body of the piston, the constant piston movement wears the plastics and allows the boost to bleed of and the turbo to lose efficiency.

I am looking at DVs for other makes and models,  I have a DV from a 1.6T DS3 to test which has a thick yellow rubber diaphragm, but for reports from my mate a DS3 tuner he says they have issues with bits braking off the the DV and killing the turbo...

IMHO the G revision valve is the best option for efficiency and performance, I dont know how long it will last but while it is working its doing a far much better job.

I have a k03 turbo to make a test rig up to test the valves back to back, but its just finding time to do it.

Interesting comments. My car has been developing a progressively more prominent boost hiss type noise, with no obvious flaws in pipework and I suspected the DV.

I'll acquire a rev g tomorrow (on order from TPS) and see if it sorts the issue - it's a cheap enough fix to attempt and easy to implement. I fitted my rev d prior to a remap on reading that the rev c was prone to splitting. At the time of fitting I thought the engine had lost some spool up speed, but wrote it off to placebo.
Hopefully I'll notice an obvious improvement when the rev g replaces the rev d.
