Rear Speed Sensor
« on: May 16, 2012, 08:22:54 pm »
Whilst driving to work a few days ago 3 lights came on the dash.
1. ABS
2. ESP
3. Tyre Pressure Warning

Parked up at work all day. Journey home no lights ?. Next day same story. Over the last few days it seems to come and go as it pleases. Anyway after a little research thought it could be the ABS module fault recently highlightd by the BBC1 Programme "Dont get done get Dom" So i contacted my local VW dealership who booked it in today. They said if it was the ABS Module it will be replaced FOC, as VW UK are aware of the issue, but they haven't seen the 3 lights together before.
I got a call late this afternoon saying that the ABS Module is fine, and the fault appears to be the REAR SPEED SENSOR. Can someone please explain to me what and where this is and how to rectify this problem.
Sorry for the long winded explanation, ThanX  :happy2:

Speed sensors measure the speed of the wheel. There is one on easch axle.  The abs needs the correct signal to sense if the wheel has stopped spinning.  The esp needs to know if one of the wheels is spinning fast than another.  Tyre warning senses when one of the wheels starts spinning slightly faster than usual as the tyre gets flat.

Easy to change and cheap.  The sensor is mounted in the hub.

I had this on a car journey from Wales. Bloody scary to set off in the rain and find the lights come on. The car was around two years old at the time. All three lights came on. If I pulled over and turned off the ignition and restarted, it would clear. But within 20m of driving, it would come back on again.

Turned out to be a sensor and was changed FOC under warranty.

The GTI isn't just a machine. It's very much a living, breathing thing.
