Paint corrosion on rear window
« on: May 06, 2012, 07:59:42 pm »
I've got paint corrosion on the vertical strip that separates the large part of the rear window from the small part (if that makes any sense!). I can't find it written down anywhere in my documents, but I assume there is a 10 or 12 year paint warranty? Car is a mk5 GTI, March 2007. If so, can I just take back to VW and they will sort? Thanks.

Christ , somewhere else they rust! Yeah mate , 12 year warranty but its by no means certain they will let you claim! Best thing is to get it down to your dealer and get them to take pics and start the claim process from VW. Good luck!  :happy2:

I have an 07 plate gti the same as yours. It has exactly the same as that on the drivers side. The other strips on the doors will go like that too looking at the edges and corners. I bought mine from vw a couple of months ago from breeze in Poole but took it to a more local dealer to get it looked at. They took photos etc. but VW would not get it fixed as they say it is not on the body. For the moment a have sanded it and painted it so it does not rust any more but at some point I need to get all the door strips done properly. The steel grey body paint is immaculate.

Does anybody know if these strips can be removed and replaced? I think they are the painted black on all cars.

What? Not covered as it's not on the body! That's ridiculous. I can see an argument brewing with my local dealer if that's the response I get. ps. the other side is the same, though not as bad.

I'm thinking of going in Saturday and buying the six pillar trims and just fit them as I think they come painted.

Oh, I see! How much are they? (do you just buy individually?). How easy are they to remove? Thanks.

The ones at the back of the front doors and the front of the back doors are about £25 each. These are easy to fit by pulling some of the rubber away and removing two screws per pillar trim.
The window separater may be a little more money but not much. This I think requires removal of the door outer skin as the fixings reside in between the outer door skin and the door frame. I think you need to remove the windows too. I will probably get these fitted for me as a body shop will have the expertise and tools. It would be good if anyone has the ekta catalogue and has the part numbers for these six parts?

Thought I'd complain to VW customer service as well. Same result, "f ck off, it's trim"  :fighting:

VW told me it's £20 for each trim, and £40 to fit each one (they have to remove the internal door panel). So £120 in total to do both.
