Bonnet Bra.....worth it?
« on: May 17, 2012, 06:39:04 pm »
Hi everyone

I'm getting my front end re-sprayed following a run in with a large forest animal recently, so bye-bye stone chips

I do quite a few motorway miles so sure to pick up a new collection of chips soon!

What's your opinion on a bonnet bra as from my experience the stone chips seems to be worse on the lower bumper and splitter on my ED30 with only a few on the bonnet itself?

Is there a full frontal bra (waiting for the jokes!!  :signLOL: ) that would protect the bumper too......although I imagine it would look pretty hideous

Probably best not to tailgate and avoid avoid gravel tracks!!

If your smart and actually follow instructiins then bb's are a great means for helping keep your paintwork in tact. i use mine every time i drive to bristol and have never had a problem with paint warping or scratches...

Always make sure you rub some wax down before you put the bb on or like dsg steel wrap some black or clear or other wrap in the front of the bonnet, hell even plasticoat it and youll have another way to help prevent scratches.. realisically.. if you keep your bb clean and stone or debris free before putting it on you shouldnt cause any damage as the ubderside on he better quality ones are cotte so really you shout cause any damage...

Sorry for all the mistakes using a phone whilst having a smoke and a tea isnt always a good combination.. if you do tthe miles then get one bud!l

I've had my whole front end resprayed due to stone chips, i only have it on for motorway driving as thats whens its most likely to get stones thrown up at it, i took th bra off after i reached the destination and let it dry for a couple days as it was raining, (underneath was totally dry on the bonnet) then when i came back again i put it back on and no stone chips or scratching :D i don't put it on for general driving as the risks of scratching/fading and damage are more likely when stone chips are less

Ohh eah forgot to mention...

Thats whats the cause for paintwarping or discolouration from where people leave a bb on for a long period of time with it constantely getting wet and dry and google will reveal the exact science of why it happens but the paint can fade (not to mwntion the sun's damage aswell)

Cheers guys, some great advice.

Think I will get one as will only use on those long motorway journeys and ensure I take it off and clean regularly  :happy2:

Will look into wrapping the front but probably getting my front splitter wrapped in gloss black when I get her back from the body shop  anyway

the guy at my paint shop suggested it may be worth putting that clear thick vinyl on the bonnet they use to cover high impact areas like behind wheels on cars, i decided coz i thought it would look obvious on red but its still a good idea and may look better on blacks white silvers perhaps?

Looks like great protection there!!

Reminds me of a WWII gas mask though!

Think you can get away with the full bra on black but not so sure on my silver Eddie!?!

Just from my experience, most my stone chips come from A and B roads, can't remember the last time a stone hit me on the Mway.  Although I would rather have some stone chips than wear that hideous bra.
