windscreen washer fluid
« on: May 20, 2012, 08:15:31 pm »
Was topping up the water for the windscreen yesterday and added in some halfords stuff i had in the garage. Bit random but what do other people use? Is there anything special anyone uses or just any old stuff and some water? Not something that normally gets talked about compared to oil, fuel, etc. Thoughts and ideals.

i know on the 8P using non-VAG stuff gums up the rear wiper's mechanism so on that basis i wouldn't use anything else. it's topped up for free during a service anyway, so if you're servicing it regularly enough it should hardly ever need topping up.

I tend to buy the pre mixed stuff from Halfords in 5ltr containers and in the 5+ years i have been using it haven't had any issues.

I also use VW stuff, but looking for something more cost effective. I have headlamp washers and its a joke the amount of time I have to keep topping up!!

I need one of these on a tow bar.....

I use autoglym screen wash in mine- seems to work well and hasn't blocked the jets up or caused any problems

autoglym for me aswell. IIRC its to do with the freezing points of the fluid that causes problems for the jets

Me too... the VAG stuff is specifically designed for the fan jets that we have - helps prevent blockages.
When mixing for the summer, the concentrate goes a long way.

I got a box of 10 off ebay and it worked out at under £3 per bottle (i think), perhaps that could be an option?

Hope this helps

yes, you dilute it.. you would only use it neat in extreme cold temperatures, -30c or colder i think.

For normal UK conditions (above freezing), i think the dilution ration is 1:4 but stand to be corrected..
