Hi everyone.

IT'S BOILING!!!!!

Just driven into Birmingham in start sop traffic and twice the box failed to take up drive in first gear. Also my car stalled once.

I opened the bonnet when I parked up and the engine was a million degrees.

I'll VCDS scan it at the weekend, but has anyone else had this happen?

No Dom I didn't. Just left it in 'M' and went to set off and it didn't want to move. :-(

personally i put it in "n" as soon as i can in traffic for this reason.

I used to do this in the old automatics as it felt like they're always pulling against the brake.
I don't do it anymore with the DSG box, but then I never drive in 'm', I always drive in 'm+'.
Any issue with th DSG box to keep putting it in 'n' every time u hit traffic??  :confused:

no issues that caused me to do this but in the manual it says treat it like a manual gearbox i think, where as if your at traffic lights take it out of gear and the same in traffic...just the way i drive

Are you sure your not getting confused that your not ment to run in neutral whilst in motion.... As your then not pumping oil around the Dsg gearbox..

I always drop into neutral in traffic. D for town crawling, and manual on the Dsg shifters all other times.

well i've found a post on another forum from T_T that contradicts what i say. there's no doubt T_T is a valuable and knowledgable member of the forums, but tbh most of the stuff i read smacks "alarmist" to me

put it this way - 99% of people who drive a DSG will not know it's any different to any other automatic. if VAG designed a gearbox that looks to the untrained eye like a torque-converter auto gearbox but needed driving differently or it'd wear it's clutch packs out they would have designed it badly and gearboxes would be failing left, right and centre and they aren't.

i don't for a second think that VAG engineers are that absent minded, so i'm happy leaving it in D when i come to a stop in traffic. if i'm stopping long enough to consider putting in it N i'd turn the car off anyway.

the only issue i have with this is that at night time you dazzle the driver behind you with your brake lights, but if you use the handbrake the car strains against it for a second before settling down and i don't like that either. (that is also proof to me that the car dips the clutch when stopping - because you can feel it doing it if you leave it in D and put the handbrake on.)

i'd never coast in N in any car lol.

I'd personally start pointing toward the mechatronics unit, just keep an eye on it and see if it starts repeating it on day's with normal outside temps. In start stop traffic they shouldn't get that hot as the gearbox isn't really doing a lot although the coolant from the engine is heating up more when stood still so isn't cooling the dsg as much. However I would just monitor it and if it gets worse, I'd say it's the mech unit.

am i right in thinking you leave the car in "D" and put the handbrake on rather than your foot brake?

no that's what i'm saying - i don't use the handbrake. i know in terms of rear end shuting and courtesy to drivers behind me it's not the best practice, but on my car at least when you're stationary and you put the handbrake on the car strains against it for a few seconds before settling down.

anyhow i've read a bit more of what T_T has written on that other forum and he's said that apparently it's ok to leave it in D for "short periods" as this is what VAG advise - but no mention as to what duration a "short period" is.

the long and short of it is that i don't think rich's driving style has anything to do with the symptoms he's experiencing which, to me, sounds like a mechatronics fault. if his car is around '07 then i believe he's in the right age band for the faulty batch that went out and failed.
