How many coats of wax needed?
« on: May 27, 2012, 11:05:23 am »
Decided would detail my car yesterday with the products I had in the garage.

snow foamed, born to be mild wash, clayed, duragloss polish, black hole glaze and then for the wax i had some Turtle Wax "Black Hole" carnuba wax.

Now, do I need to put as many coats of the wax on as possible if I want to protect the shine/ get some good beading if it rains??

Two is usually more than enough for any way. Applying more ends up stripping previous layers so you're undoing your work. Then top up as required.

Make sure You leave first layer for some time to cure before layering

i dont use wax, prefer sealant as it lasts longer, usually you would do 2 coats to make sure you havn't missed anywhere in the first coat :driver:

I think most products tend to have a full cure time before which you shouldn't apply a second coat. Some state this on the tub. 24-48 hours seems to work for most but it depends on the individual product. Unless the car has been stored in a dust-free environment where there's no chance of anything settling on the paintwork, I'd rather rewash the car, dry and then appy the second layer. Some people just use a quick detailer for a wipe down prior to application instead.

Two coats is the right wax to do things, not to get two layered coats but to ensure you get at least one good full & even coat down.
