Hi All,

Would like to replace my standard CD player with a SatNav unit.

From what I’ve read the OEM units are not a straight forward fit?

So what are my options for reasonably priced alternative? Preferably one which includes a reverse park camera and handsfree?

(or am I asking too much?)

Why aren't the OEM ones not a straightforward fit? They fit fine as they're designed for the car. Yes you have to code (ie tell the car what's fitted) but it is completely straightforward. I did my own.

The most popular OEM is the RNS-510 though does have limitations compared to aftermarket units. But you can add a bluetooth module and a reversing camera that utilises the badge - speak to SteveP about this stuff since he did mine.

The GTI isn't just a machine. It's very much a living, breathing thing.

By straight forward I meant being plug and play and not having anything more than the unit itself (i.e. GPS Antenna/ additional modules etc). Am I right in saying the RNS-510 does have these extra bits? Where do they have to go?

I normally do prefer OEM set up - even though it's often inferior to the well known aftermarkets brands (and usually just as expensive).

How much would the RNS-510 set up cost me? (roughly).

Also what are the alternatives to RNS-510 (RCD-510?) and what do I get in this model that's not available in older ones?

Is there a How-to guide on the forum so I can see how easy it is?

I'm pretty sure all navi units require at least an external GPS antenna. These are no problem to fit though.

With an RNS you'll have to consider the age of the model/firmware against what CAN gateway you have, to prevent battery drain.

I have a Zenec NC2010 which is pretty close to OEM behaviour and looks, getting cheaper now and loaded with spec.
There is also a Kenwood which is highly rated in the mk5.
Used to have Edition 30 - number 009 and a GT TDI 140.
Now have an S4 B8 Avant (stage 2)

The RNS510 doesn't include Bluetooth, that's an additional installation.

There is a unit the Skoda do, the Admunsen which I think is the RNS310 and has Bluetooth built in.

As stated by vRStu, the bluetooth and RVC are add-ons. If you buy an RNS-510, you need to make sure you get the unit, the code, firmware and maps, and the GPS antenna as together. You can either buy secondhand or buy off one of the forumites here who deals with getting them in. The bluetooth module is separate and you're looking at around £300 from ebay and the RVC is around another £300. You can get secondhand RNS510 units for £250-400 depending on various factors.

The GTI isn't just a machine. It's very much a living, breathing thing.
