How to check for wear on engine/transmission mounts
« on: June 01, 2012, 11:42:49 pm »
Right have a feeling one of my mounts may be worn, how can I check this? Would car possibly pull away a bit shaky from 1st (DMF is fine). Any way I can physically check them? Is there 3 or 4?

There are three mounts, engine mount on driver side, transmission mount on passenger side and dog bone mount at the bottom of the engine.

Without traction power is nothing!

Thanks for that, now how can I go about checking them. With a large bar or similar? Should they have a bit of play I'd imagine?

way i had mine checked was simple...

get a helper to start your car (you should be starting your car with the clutch depressed btw)

then...just start the engine... there shouldnt be MUCH movement although there ought to be some movement in the engine, then rev the engine, again, shouldnt be much movement in the engine when you rev it - a little is expected. (would be a good idea to do this when the engine is warm btw)

for the lower engine mount, dont do what i did and stick a bar in there and tear the mount! lol. if your worried about the bottom mount, just stick a powerflex insert in there, i know that eurocarparts do them for about 21/22quid if you want it quicker than ordering off the net

good luck!
