Either way, the sellers are just trying to big-up the provenance to gain a higher price or get it sold. Us lot here know quite a bit about the true history of this car and, as Greeners rightly points out, the plate fiasco. Many folks out there probably won't know the history behind the plates and they'll believe that the car is more special than it is. Estate agents, auctioneers, car salesmen, they're all the same!

I would say yes it's had a hard life but equally if VW treat their press cars like what we treat ours they are more than well maintained.

And isn't the GTI designed to be driven quite hard? The key is not to thrash from cold and to maintain properly.
