popped into my local dealers yesterday to find it was absoloutly packed with customers, had a quick work with one of the guys theret and he said i would have to make an appointment for the mechanic to measure the depth of the paint? did anyone else have to make an appointment or shall i just go back on a weekday when it wont be as mad

....It's normal that the dealers are instructed by VW UK to check your paint depth so that they can be sure that no other paint has been applied, otherwise they are not liable to repair/replace your rusty wings.

Saturday is the worst day you could possibly choose to visit your VW dealer - They will be busier and the TechieMechies finish their day at 1:00pm. A salesperson will not be able to check your paint depth.

hi reading back through this thread.
am i correct in my thinking mk5 golf diesel you get automatic warranty replacement ?
as said in earlier post my drivers side wing has bit of arch missing through the rust, passenger lot of surface rust.
another thing i have aftermarket wheels on as my car is the 2.0 gttdi & had the standard 16" wheels on that were in very bad condition with common laquer peel.
been on a tyre calculator old wheels 205/55/16 new wheels 225/40/18 result was 0.79% difference & 5mm extra bigger tyre they wont try to say this is why because i have only just changed wheels & rust has been there since i bought the car oct 2011.

....Wheels has got nothing to do with it. I'm riding on OZ Alleggerita's.

No warranty issue is automatic - It's all subject to the individual circumstances/case.

Your wheels wouldn't make any difference. You should be able to get both wings replaced free of charge as long as there has never been any damage or repair work done near the rust. Depends on your dealer on how willing they will be to put in a claim for you though. Don't take no for an answer though!

I got rust on both my front wings.
My VW dealer is happy to see the vehicle, only problem is I had the whole of the one side resprayed (had some scratches)
It's an 84 mile round trip to my nearest VW bodyshop too.

As far as am aware any repair or paint they won't do that side.
Reading through forum they do a paint thickness test.

....Correct  :happy2:

That's why they want to check the paint thickness because it is reliable evidence.

I wonder how much they would charge to do the painted side?

I also need all my alloys refirbished. Anyone any idea what VW charge ?

A non VW garage nearby is quoting £300 for all 4 17inch wheels

Doh. I put some QRust on mine, turned it blue... didn't paint it though... I'm sure it will come off untreated.

Gentlemen, I am currently going thorough this scenario at the moment.

This Sunday i washed my car and noticed that i have rust appearing on the L/H & R/H sills and when opening both door notice a large amount of crap building up within this area. On further inspection i notice rust also appearing on L/H & R/H front wings, after washing my car i set down do look into this further on the internet and stumbled across 2 x threads (This one and http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,23594.0.html).

Once reading them i though that i would phone VW customer service and informed them of my situation, The lady i spoke to advised me to go to the local dealership that has a body shop and get the areas checked out.

That day i drove to the local dealership and spoke to a very nice gentleman who was fully aware of the front wing issue but had little knowledge of the sill problem. I showed him around the car and he took photos of all areas that had rust and and opened a case for me, While on the computer he showed me a document which had pictures of other cars will rust around the sills and said that the issue is not covered by the 12 yr warranty but as a good will gesture offered 50/50 settlement of the sill problem.

I told him that as they are going to cover the front wings wouldn't it be prudent to repair the sills as both jobs overlap. the salesman agreed and informed me that it will be inexpensive if VW do not agree to cover the sills.

Once home i called VW customer services again and informed them what i had done and they said they would get back to me regarding my case, 2 Hrs later i received a call from VW saying the will not cover the sill problem and the cost of my half would be £280, I said that i couldn't understand why the have refused and explained that other people have had this issue and had all work carried out FOC.

Currently i am waiting to hear back from the Case team so i would appreciate any advice that anybody could give on this to help my case.
If anybody has links to technical bulletins that they wouldn't mind forwarding would be ideal.

While i wait i am using boroscope equipment to take photos of all areas from the side and even going behind the wing guards to take pictures of all the crap collected to help my case.

Please Please help with any info my email is Phil.mcbain@gmail.com

I've just noticed that both my front wings now have rust. Without having read any of this thread, can someone tell me if they paint the while wing - or just repair the said area's?

Also, would VW give me a courtesy car, as I suspect this will take a couple of days.

Has anyone got a any pictures of the amount of rust we are talking about here as mine is just starting to rust.

Have a 06 plate golf mk5.

And wondering if I have a case for taking it to the vw dealership?

Thanks
