Just to add to this, I've been rejected twice by VW for two different cars both inside of 12 years.

1 - wheel arch rust MK5 (they said it was a mechanical fault)

2 - tailgate rot MK4 r32 (they said it's edge and seam rust)

Basically - the 12 year warranty doesn't cover anything.

Was in the process of having mine sorted privately when I saw this thread...
Now booked in Monday with VW for the inspection. My tailgate got the rust around the handle too. Let's see what they have to say...

@SKULLZY I'd be very interested in the tailgate rust around the handle outcome.

I had mine examined and heard nothing more (send by main dealer to body shop, who says they passed all details to main dealer. Main dealer never got back to me). I have chased twice. Just remember that service history and milage isn't a condition of the 12 year rust warranty. Nor is it possible to do that damage with jewellery etc or jam your hand in there. Nor mechanical damage from the badge rubbing the body. The If they say it's not covered as its a "folded panel" ask to see the exclusion in the warranty terms from the year your car was made.

Yes they may have spotted it earlier if you'd had a FVWSH but if you've only just got the car or have only just notices the rust, you are bringing to their attention as soon as you've spotted it.

Mine is getting quite unsightly after being hardly noticeable a year ago.

Good luck

Has anybody noticed that the TSB pdf (dated Nov 2009) is referring to Diesel engined vehicles? Is there a later version of the TSB that I don't have? I take it the foam is still present on petrol engines too?

Has anyone tried this with Nottingham VW (we have two VW dealerships)?

My cousin ( @FaisalGti ) has just purchased a DSG GTI and one of the front wings has started to bubble. Is that enough to ask VW to repair/replace? Or do they actually need to see rust?

My wings seem ok (one was replaced a couple of years ago anyway), but my sills have started to rust. Would VW cover this also?

Any help would be appreciated. Is it best to email VW or call them? Not sure what to say or where to start from as afraid they might try to fob off and I'm not very persuading on the phone.

Had my o/s front wing done at Vertu Mansfield. The communication at the branch was shocking, but they did a good job on the repair which is the important part.

Definitely call them! I sent 2 emails and never got a reply. I was calling them before the bodyshop had their own receptionist, so either the phone rang out or I didn't get a reply to my voicemail. They have a receptionist now, so is much better apparently.

My wing was just bubbled. Its better like that rather than showing rust because they cannot claim 'external influence' to the damage if the paint is not broken. The wings are a known fault in the paint and prep work by VW, so they don't argue too much from what I heard and didn't on mine.

To be honest, the West Bridgford branch has been OK so far. They responded fairly quickly to my email and called us in. We went in the other day and they did their tests and took our details. They said they'd call us back if it is approved.

However, the chap did mention that they have loads of Golf's come in recently for the exact same issue and they are fully aware of it, so there is a waiting list.

We are prepared to wait, as they have seen it in the bubbling condition and took photos etc.

Sounds like West Bridgford are pretty good on comms, but like I said Mansfield are probably better now with the new body shop receptionist, I just caught them before they had that service available.

Waiting wise, I had mine accessed (examined, photos, etc), approved by VW and the work done within a month, so on that side I have no complaints about the Mansfield centre. Also, they don't bother repairing the rust, they just replace the whole wing.

It covered my wheel arch and my mates on his Mk5...so maybe we both got lucky!

VW Birmingham have approved mine - small rust bubble appearing on left wing (right wing was repainted a few years ago following an accident).

The GTI isn't just a machine. It's very much a living, breathing thing.

I waited weeks for a call back after I'd been for the assessment (at which point they pretty much confirmed it'd all be covered without issue).

I ended up phoning them and they said "oh yes we've had your wings here for a while"! No idea why they didn't call back, but ultimately it got done, to a good standard.

This is JCT600 Hillsborough by the way.

Trust VW in Wolverhampton wouldn't even entertain the idea of looking at my wings... Both are bubbling, told me I need to take it the car too a VW dealership in Shrewsbury that's got a bodyshop - tried more than once they just fob me off... 11 dealership stamps and that's the attitude...   :slap:

More interested in creating unnecessary work and selling service plans when having it serviced/MOT'ed...

I'll just pay and get it sorted myself after the winter...

To be fair my closest dealer (JCT600 Rotherham) said the exact same to me - go to a dealer with a bodyshop - and it did seem a bit like they were fobbing me off. But when I finally got round to doing so the dealer with the bodyshop played ball. So don't pay unless you really have to. There's a certain degree of getting out there and finding a good dealer to this.

I've got some rust coming at the front of the sills under where the wings volt on, and along the step in the passenger door shut just starting to bubble through the paint, would this be covered. Car is totally standard and never had any body work done

Does anybody know of a vw bodyshop to in or around Glasgow? I have rust bubbles on both rear arches where they meet with the rear bumper. My car turns 12 in March so need to get it in quite soon.
