Took my car into main stealers 2 weeks ago tomorrow (8/6) rang dealer again yesterday who gave me a number which after googling it turned out be for VW Van Centre Liverpool and said they were the ones who would be sorting the repair work out... bit of a distance from where I live, Stoke! Rang the number numerous times and it just rings out! Why do I get the feeling I am being fobbed off / the buck is being passed?

....Complain (politely but firmly) to VW UK about the dealer.

Just contacted MK Customer Care who put me through to Stoke VW, asked why they used a place so far away to do the warranty repair, she didn't know. They're getting back to me tomorrow morning with a status update!

I took my 2005 Gti into VW last week to have my rust inspected, sills and wings. They were pretty helpful and seemed keen to get it done as the wings were "repaired" because of rust only 7 months ago (previous owner).

Bit of an update. I got a call from VW Chelmsford on Weds and VW have agreed to the works. The chap said that they have to follow VW guidelines and try to repair firs but if that doesn't work it will be new wings.

The car is booked in from Fri 27th July (earliest he could do was the 16th but the other date works better for me). I will also get a basic 1.2 Polo as courtesy car but they can't do the insurance so I will need to contact my insurer for temp cover.

Also he is gonna do the bits I need colour coding and poss have the bonnet blown over to get rid of stone chips

....The VW guidelines for this is the PDF which myself and others are distributing here: Plan A = Repair, Plan B = Replace.

I know, but they have to take the wings off on mine as they have to do the sills so it would have been easier to put new wings on. Either way its gone through and its booked in to be done so I can't grumble

I'm just getting new wings with no hassle. They said it's not worth repairing the rust damage because it will only come back again. The rust is because of a design fault with the the way the arch lining meets the arch and water and dirt gets in. The new wings are redesigned versions that will eliminate the problem.

....That's not at all how I understand it. The new wings are only 'redesigned' without the foam strips (removable by your VW dealer's workshop) which were fitted originally to reduce noise and vibration from diseasel Mk5 Golf engines. The foam collects moisture and hence promotes rust. It's all in VW's PDF on the subject.

Just passing on what my dealer told me. They were very helpful, and explained it was a well known problem by VW. They said water and dirt gets into the gap between the lining and the arch, creating an abrasive paste that wears away at the arch and causes rust. They said normal moisture wouldn't affect the metal because it is fully galvanized, which is why they are confident enough to give such a long rust warranty. Again, i'm just passing on what they said, how accurate that is I wouldn't know.

how much are they charging for the other work?

Chelmsford isnt far from me and I could go and see them... but I have a long list of other paintwork bits I want doing too... including painting the bonnet and front bumper.

I only asked for a rough price at the time as he hasn't seen the parts and we was mainly wanting to get the warranty side of things sorted. Roughly £300 for skirts, R32 lower valance and votex lip and £250 for bonnet and then VAT on top but they are only rough prices and where they have the car in already he could sort something out so will know definite prices at the end of July
