@GSP1973 excellent! It really seems it's hit and miss as to the treatment you get. Strange really considering it has an official bulletin and the money is there for the dealers to repair. I too had a great experience with the wings and sills.

Has anyone since having had theirs repaired become more aware of noticing others with the same problem? If I happen to walk past a mk5 there's very often signs of rust or bubbling which I guess unless you're and enthusiast and you read here, that you're not aware there's a free (debatable) remedy.

agree on both points mate. I feel for people going through it because it can initially take the enjoyment of the car away as you can't help but notice it whilst waiting for it to get worse. Only for this forum I'd have never known any better.

Here are a couple of photos of my rust. I don't have any of the sills as its been horribly wet today and they are filthy!

This one isn't very clear but I was struggling as I didn't fancy taking my SLR out in the rain so its from a phone!

Look just above the door mount and you'll see it starting to creep out there.
Mate that is extensive. I can't believe it's anything but manufacturing damage while the car was being put together.

The rust is on both sides as far as the door rust goes. Tailgate is rotting away as is the bonnet. VW USA will fix the bonnets, VW UK - Oh its edge and fold... not covered but we will give you 50% goodwill.......

Thanks for your reply, and incase anyone wonders - the paint depths are perfect all over the car, so none of it has been repaired or resprayed. This is a 50,000 mile 2008 car.

Can anyone recommend a dealer in South Yorks / North Notts that has been helpful with this?

Seems a bit of a lottery.

I took my 07 GTI to my local VW dealer for them to have a look at both front wings and sills, they wouldn't do either of the wings under warranty as both have been previously painted. The dealer it took it to were bloody useless. I was constantly having to chase them up and they didn't give me any confidence at all so I don't think I'd want them working on my car anyhow!

It's not too bad at the moment really, just a slight bubbling but I want to get it sorted so I'll be taking it to a local body shop with a good reputation. I think my best bet would be to cut the foam back and repair the affected area as I don't think it's bad enough to justify two new wings...yet.

Does anybody have the technical service bulletin handy?  I'm just looking to get as much info as possible at the moment.

Thanks in advance!

@Reflex sorry to hear you didn't get much luck. Looks like they may have been repaired beforehand?

Here's the bulletin: http://www.stuartdalby.co.uk/vwgolfmk5/rust_wing/2009Nov9CorrosionToGolkMk5FrontWing.pdf

Yes it looks like that might be the case, although for it to be bubbling again I can only assume that the foam wasn't cut back.

Thanks for the link, it's very helpful!

Sorry to hear that your warranty claim was unsuccessful. I've heard that even if the rust has been repaired to a high standard, there is a very high possibility of it returning. That was told to me by both my Indy mechanic and my local VW dealer. The only way is to replace the affected wing/wings.

I've got the car booked in with a local body shop to get both wings replaced, painted and blended along with both sills too.  I'll be glad when it's sorted!

I got quotes from a couple of places, both VW approved. For two new wings, painting, blending etc and sills being sorted one place quoted me as near as makes no difference £1900  :surprised: and the other one who Im booked in with was considerably less.  I got a much better feeling about the second place (regardless of cost), it was smaller, family run and I was being dealt with by the owner.

I hope its going to be money well spent!

I took my golf to the vw body clinic in bradford for both wings and sills checking about 4 weeks ago.
I got a call Wednesday from them saying vw are willing to do the drivers wing free of charge, as for the passenger side and both sills they will pay 50%. Id have to pay £372.02 with the 50%. I refused on the phone so the guy at the body clinic give me the number to vw customer services, I rung them explained what had been said the complaint had been logged. I got told a manager would call me within 36hrs but I missed the call on Friday. Do I need to tell them anything to get the work done FOC? Im willing to seek legal advice if necessary as I don't see why I should pay a penny for the corrosion issue

Good luck with it mate, they wouldn't budge from 50% for me. I haven't given up, will get back onto them at some point but currently life is getting in the way.
