Ed 30 misfire/jerk on acceleration
« on: June 08, 2012, 10:43:07 pm »
Problem started yesterday when tried overtaking and felt the car jerk and misfire on accleration. On part throttle no problem but when i accelerate the jerk is quite heavy, have not tried to press any further to check if this will clear or not cause i hold off the pedal as soon as this happens. Took it the local vw dealer yesterday and no faults came up, nothing at all   i read the coilpacks on these go(mine does not qualify for recall) so i bought 4 yesterday £150 but have not replaced  yet and after going threw some similar searches online i now see it could be plugs. Should i just try changing the plugs and see if this clears the problem before trying the coilpacks. If it is the plugs then i can just return  the coil packs. Don't really want to try the coilpacks and then the plugs cold be the problem

I have this weekend free so really need to sort this

my gti had a similar problem and it was the plugs. IIRC if it doesnt throw a fault its usually the plugs and if it does and you get a warning light its more likely the coils
Black 2007 gti, 18' monza 2, sat-nav, highline, i-pod dock, armrest, 35mm H&R springs, WALK, BCS tbe, autotech front and rear arbs, ITG maxogen, NQSBBK... and more to come

I had this On my ed30... As soon as it came in boost it would jerk/misfire... No faults, won't be as no sensors in plugs to register faults... Changed plugs, back to perfect running...

Get your plugs changed! :-)

i did find it strange no faults were picked up. i would be interested if it is in fact the plugs as the car has had a full service at the very same vw dealer. do plugs go faulty after 3 months? i am going to get a set this morning and hopefully this will do the trick, thanks guys. keep you posted on the result

ed30 has been remapped and this misfire 2-3 months after remap, with regards to plugs, should i go for the standard ngk longlife platinum or ngk iridium. after some online searching most do not recommend the ngk platinum. any1 else had this on a remap, what are best plugs to fit?

Yeah mine happened after a full service, and they were supposed to have changed them through courtesy(VW UK involved) but when i had this problem my local tuner immediately knew it was either sparks or coils, when no faults came up they knew it was sparks, changed them and ran spot on!

I'd just go with the standard oem sparks, unless you are heavily modified which  a colder plug is supposed to work better, check out the review section for the cooler plug, but i'd stick with oem spec, which i think are 7's.

I had this problem start about 2 months ago and still on going. Went to Stage one using Revo and all work carried out at Awesome GTi. I was advised to fit the cold running plugs from them which I did. Mine came up with faults though, one to do with the fuel pump and the other was the engine speed sensor. I checked with VW UK and my ED30 had the coil packs changed in 2011 under recall so didn't expect them to have gone already. Awesome thought the plugs fixed the problem but as I drove it away it still did the same so took it straight back and they've now ordered the engine speed sensor (£90) and they'll fit that and hopefully it might be fixed, if it doesn't then they've talked about getting a HPFP but I still think the coil packs would be a good thing to try but they don't seem to agree so I'm leaving it to them, they do know a lot more than I do after all

Ok changed the plugs-long life ngk platinum and makes no difference. would i now suspect the coil packs. eratic idle aswell-revs drop then up  again where it should be. this does not clear off even if i accelerate abit

Changed 4 coilpacks now after the 4 plugs did not make a difference, idle is spot on, no misfire on boost. Pulls like is should on a remap, seems to be very quick on light throttle.
Thanks for all the advice chaps, much appreciated

I think I might just try the coil packs and see if it fixes it even if Awesome hasn't recommended I do. It fixed your fault and by the sounds of it, your fault is probably the same as mine. Will try getting some on Monday.

Glad you got it sorted mate, strange it didn;t bring up a fault on the coilpacks, but at least you know that side of things is spot on...

Cheers mate, figured it saved me alot than going to the dealers to get the job done.
I did take it to VW yesterday and nothing came up on the computer. So running great now and also put the revised G diverter valve on-mpg from 26/27.5 to 35/38

5 years old now 58k so i will keep an eye on any upgrades to keep the car running great.
