Anyone else made the move from tdi to gti?
« on: June 03, 2012, 06:05:13 pm »
Afternoon,
Popped over here from ukmkivs, am looking to replace my mk4 gt tdi with a mk5 gti, budget will be between 6/7k so should hopefully get an average mileage earlier car in good nick, will be looking at cars from garages to get a warranty unless i can find a really good example from an enthusiast, however not many options at this price range!

Has anyone else made the move from tdi to gti? 30mpg and 6speed seem pretty decent to me for 200 horses!

Come Accross a 2004 5door silver mk5 gti.
Not many options however it has the arm rest and 6cd changer,
its on 71k but has fsh, and is up for £6295 at a local garage, is this  a good price?
Only thing is the exhausts are covered in muck/deposits and look a right mess, is this fixable or will it need new tips?

Yes.  I went from a mk5 1.9tdi to a GRI edition 30.

Exhaust tips usually clean up ok

Hi and welcome! I had a Bora 1.9 tdi Highline for 5 years before I bought the GTI. You'll miss the fuel economy. 45mpg compared to 25-30mpg...what price do put on happyness??? Goodluck with the search!

I think i remember you off ukmkivs, retrofit xenons on the mk5 tdi?

How do you find the gti compared to the tdi? how many miles are you doing a year?

That's me. :-)

The GTI is much much better to drive. I do 25k a year an yes its not brilliant on fuel but it's fun and I love it so that's how I justify it.

Ok so it wasn't a Golf but I came from a Civic Type-S CTDI (mapped to 180bhp) into the Golf, and even though the tax, insurance and running costs went up, I don't regret it one bit - maybe when I have my own place to pay for I'll be pining for a diesel again

.
Back in 2005 I road tested a Mk5 2.0 TDI with a Mk5 GTI back-to-back on the same roads and was surprised how good the TDI was. But, the GTI had the edge and was well worth the couple of grand extra. I actually ordered the DSG TDI but woke up in the night screaming and changed my order to the GTI. Thank goodness I locked Captain Sensible in the garden shed!

I think it depends on how enthusiastic a driver you are as to which suits you best.
