Carbon Grey smart repair... would you buy?
« on: June 11, 2012, 06:36:48 pm »
Hi All,

After 3 weeks without a car getting a little desperate now and looked at a lovely MK6 GTi in Carbon grey. Car is in good condition and great spec, but has a 5 ish cm scratch and then a 1 cm one next to it on the roof by above driver door.

My nail stopped in it so I was gutted and walked away. The garage are going to try and get it out somehow although I'm a bit sceptical about this. Worst case scenario, do you think a smart repair would do the trick?

How effective is it likely to be on this colour? Quite fussy about cars and want to pick the right one! Its good value deal which makes it tempting...

Thoughts?

I feared that might be the consensus especially due to where it is located.  Still tempted but worried it will drive me mad for years to come. :rolleye:

If the garage thought that a smart repair would be any good, then why haven't they already have done it?  Smart repair firms have their place, but it sounds like you're right to be very cautious.

Be suprised by how many cars have had paintwork that are brand new, just dropped off the girlfriends car at the bodyshop and they have a brand new golf plus in with a large dent and scratch in the roof which is being filled and the whole roof painted before its new owner collects, apparently 'he will never know'  :signLOL:

After inspection he has also told me that the girlfriends car has had a new door at some point, which is a suprise as her dad has owned it from new and never had any damage. What must go on at dealers.

if the car is the car you want, get the money off to get the roof repainted?

a good paint shop and a wet sand would make the roof look better than the factory paintwork. if you're worried about warranty get a trusted VW Approved shop to do it. they needn't be expensive, my local VAG Approved sprayer certainly isn't, and they also have a side job restoring classic and collectible cars and had an F40 in when i was getting quoted  :notworthy:

They are gonna do their best to get it out and come back to me so I guess I'll have to see how it goes. I didnt really want to buy a car that needs paint, and certainly not one where the whole roof needs it for the sake of 5-6cm.

When I was selling cars we used smart repairs all the time, sometimes for brand new cars.  why don't you just see if they can sort it, if not walk away.

Every new car usually has some paint touched up between it being manufactured and delivered. These are mass produced. Not hand painted wrapped in silk Lambos.
