Long Life servicing question

Hi there,

Looking for a Mk 5 Gti in the £8-10k price bracket.  I found one I liked the look of and called the dealer to ask about service history, stated full VW service history, but it's only had 2 services.

It's a 2006 with mileage is 60k, first service was done at 29k which seems very high!!  Is this normal?   and the second service at 48k.  Cambelt has also not been done, which I think it should have been at 4 years old.  He admitted the cambelt should be done asap but that the service intervals were fine under the long life plan, but 30k before a first service worries me.  Should I avoid and move on?

VW offer longlife servicing so those distances seem acceptable.

It's generally agreed that a GTI shouldn't be on longlife, but it doesn't breach VW guidelines.


Don't worry, go for it if it's a good buy. Have the belt & waterpump done and an oil/filter change, and ask the dealer to change the service intervals to time & distance - this will prompt you to change oil every year or 10k.

Nope first service should have been 18/20K, it's gone over by 9K....that's any chance of Vw goodwill out of the question
I wouldn't but it I'll defiantly walk away but this is just my veiw!
Why has it gone over by 9K? First service may only be a oil and filter change but it's the inspection that's important, if the owner has decided to go over by 9k for whatever reason it makes me want to ask the question what else has been put off? And like you said cambelt should have been.done, seems to me like maintenance isn't that important to the previous owner when in fact its the most important part, car could have done 160 K and I'd rather buy a 160 K eddie that's been maintained over and 60 K eddie that hasn't

I paid 7k for an 07 plate with 42k. It's been serviced 3 times inc major service and cambelt.

I work in the trade hence the price.

I'd imagine it would have been £8k plus from a dealer.

Could someone give me a rough indication of the cost of changing the cambelt and waterpump at a main dealer and independent, will give me some negociating power as a lot for sale seem to need it done soonish.
